The book is fine. Old but adequate for the class. Setting up the online lessons was more difficult than it should be. Returning to the site to continue lessons was even more difficult. I registered and attempted part of the first lesson. Returning to the site was difficult as it did not recognize my email address even after several attempts. I then entered an alternate email address and it requested all my information again and then posted an update over information on the page about how I should proceed. Part of the tech support input page was obscured by the update flag. I attempted to access several time and each time it just won't cooperate. I sent unflattering emails to tech support and awaited a reply. After s short period I tried tech support again then gave up. Desperate to continue my lessons I attempted to sign in again and used my original email address and password again and then it finally granted me access. It just doesn't seem that it should be this difficult I don't think accessing site should be this frustrating, but I finally got access. This site isn't intuitive.
I purchased this text because of all the recommendations across the Internet proclaiming its exemplary contents and the author's ability to impart knowledge of classical guitar technique. I did not make a mistake in so doing, because this book lives up to every positive evaluation on the Net.Having already acquired a Bachelor in Music degree, I was well versed in reading music of any genre, but had never laid a finger on a guitar until my little girl decided she wanted to learn the instrument. Well, Dad just had to find out all the intricacies of the guitar so that he could play along with his little angel. This book not only helps me do just that, but keeps me well ahead of her progress (of course, I will never reveal that to her).If you really want to learn classical guitar with all the proper finger placements and technique, as well as learn how to read music while doing so, get this book. Of course, it cannot fully replace a real instructor, but it will do more than fare you well with your own attempt to learn this beautiful instrument. Get this book! You can't go wrong with this purchase!
I originally purchased an earlier version of this book in the early 1970's. I tried playing classical guitar back in my early 20's, but, alas, other projects got in the way. I decided to try again 40 years later, but I couldn't find my original book. On receiving this new copy, I learned that a CD is not included. I am totally loving revisiting an old desire to learn classical guitar through this book. Interestingly enough, I have my Vol 2 book, but that was too advanced for my present "begin again" status. Even sections about how to sit, how to trim your nails, etc. are all helpful to me on restarting the "back to the basics" approach. The only advice I am presently NOT heeding in the book is to find a good instructor. But at my age, playing for simple enjoyment is good enough. And I am enjoying playing with the CD. The early tracks are slow enough that you can play without getting lost. Also, I found that my timing was not what it should be. I thought that the tracks were not in synch with the music in the book. If you run into this situation, you may need to count out loud to find out where YOU are off track...not the CD. Well worth every penny of my investment.
I got this for my grandson.. I used this method in the 1960's as a teenager... It's the best, and this latest version is even better than the original! I have used many of the old classic methods over the years, some from the old masters in the 19th. century, they must be used with an instructor for technique development. This one only needs occasional help from an instructor due to the videos!
This book is a treasure. I use it for my guitar classes and for practice exercises. I look forward to finish studying it to keep going with the next course. By the way, the CD which came included with the book is very helpful; so, definitely this was a very good purchase for me: excellent price prompt delivery and an incredible price.
Years ago, I wanted to learn how to play classical guitar. My father had lent me his guitar and the book Aaron Shearer Classical Guitar Technique Vol 1. I worked through the whole summer through this book, and by the end of the summer I was playing pieces by Aguado and Fernando Del Sor. It's useful in showing how to hold the instrument, what the different letters for each finger represent and how to read the music on the page. I had the advantage of already playing a couple of instruments, but working with six strings had slowed me down until I used this book. They have since added a cd with it. I recently bought this as a gift for my nephew who was interested in learning classical technique, so I am unfamiliar with the contents of the cd. I learned without it. I recommend this book to anyone interested in classical guitar playing. I'm on my second copy of it, as I've worn out the first from playing the repertoire at the end.
A great book. Although it seems easy, it slowly builds up skills that are required when doing more complex activities.
I've been playing guitar for a few years now but I'm self taught and, despite whatever skill I've managed to gain over the years, I've always had trouble with the theory side of music. I've recently decided to get back into playing guitar and gone for the challenge of learning classical AND theory. This book covers those bases very nicely.Easy to follow, nice steady difficulty curve, great illustration. Ideally, I'd use this book in conjunction with formal lessons, even if only occasionally, as there's aspects of technique that can't be learned from a book alone. But if you can't get to a tutor, this is about as good as a book can get!Recommended.
