This was the Star Wars book I’ve been waiting for.When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2014 and effectively rebooted the canon, allowing for a complete narrative overhaaul of the novel line, I was pretty psyched. For years, I had longed to jump into the Star Wars novels, but had always found the sheer size of the EU’s canon simply to be too overwhelming. A fresh restart allowed me the opportunity to jump in from the beginning, and ever since the release of the first new-canon novel “A New Dawn,” in August 2014, I’ve more or less read everything that’s been published.The downside to reading every “Star Wars” book published? Most of the novels, with a few notable exceptions, have fallen closer to the ‘eh’ side of the spectrum than the ‘OMG that was amazing’ side, at least for me. Especially over the last year, I’ve found that most of the new “Star Wars” novels that have been published have been diverting at best, outright cash-grabs to other, “more important” Star Wars media at worst. “Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel.” “Ahsoka.” “Rebel Rising.” “Thrawn.” “Guardians of the Whills.” All of these are books that were well-written enough…but none of them, at least for me, left close to any impression.So when I tell you that “Leia, Princess of Alderaan” DOES leave an impression, and currently stands as one of the very few “Star Wars” books published post-2014-reboot that I unabashedly loved…believe me when I tell you that, for me, that was a pretty big deal, not to mention also a pretty big relief. I had honestly begun to wonder if I would ever read another Star Wars book that I truly loved…and would ya look at that: Claudia Gray came to the rescue and delivered just that.What makes this book work is the same thing that made “Lost Stars” (also written by Gray) so good: the focus on characters. Rather than getting bogged down in stories that just feel like rehashes of events we’ve seen or read countless other times across other Star Wars media, Gray puts the focus first and foremost on developing the relationships between young Leia and those around her: her mother Breha. Her father Bail. Her friend Amilyn Holdo. Her love interest Kier. These relationships, and all of the complex emotions that come with them, are the primary things that fuel this book and give it the energy that it has; they’re also what make it such a compelling read: you as a reader are invested in the plot not because you’re expected to, but because Claudia Gray actually gives you a REASON to. It’s unbelievably refreshing, not just to see that in a Star Wars novel, but to read it in ANY novel, period, and if “Lost Stars” or the pretty good “Bloodline” hadn’t already done it, then “Leia, Princes of Alderaan” completely solidifies Claudia Gray as THE best Star Wars author currently working today.“Leia, Princess of Alderaan” is the definition of a “breath of fresh air”: it’s well written, has characters you care about, and rarely if ever drags. She just does.That much was evident when I read BLOODLINE last year, which quickly turned into one of my favorite novels of the new canon. In BLOODLINE, we got a gorgeous and nuanced portrayal of an older -- though no less sharp -- Leia. And in this novel we get yet another gorgeous and nuanced portrayal of Leia -- this time in her youth. Both of Gray's portrayals are remarkable in that they are distinct enough to signify growth, while still remaining very much true to the voice that Carrie Fisher helped create for the character. It's a delight to read.In Carrie Fisher's last book, THE PRINCESS DIARIST, there were included some entries from a diary she kept during the filming of Star Wars, when she was barely 21 years old. Her voice in these entries is melodramatic and highfalutin and emotionally honest, in the way only young writers can be, but it is no less poetic and beautiful. It's safe to assume that Gray read the book, and that it only helped to shape her portrayal of the Leia-in-the-making that appears in this novel -- some of the passages manage to evoke that raw energy Fisher's early writings displayed.The story itself is relatively straightforward, although it is not without nuance (if Gray does anything well in her work, it is nuance). The plot is tense and thrilling enough to satisfy the action-adventure aspect of the Star Wars franchise -- but this a story that is more emotional than anything. Knowledge of the subsequent stories casts a large shadow over the events in this novel, and the result is that you read this as a tragedy, despite the fact that the story we are currently reading is a largely hopeful one. "Your home will always be here," Leia's mother, Breha, tells her at one point. And we just know. Moments like this one are scattered throughout the novel, and the effect is chilling.After LOST STARS and BLOODLINE, I knew that I was going to read anything and everything Gray wrote in this universe. LEIA, PRINCESS OF ALDERAAN only strengthens that commitment.

One of cinema's most beloved characters, Princess Leia juggles many roles. In the original Star Wars film, we are introduced to a 20-year-old who is a senator, a princess, and a rebel. To her credit, Carrie Fisher made viewers believe that the woman on screen could encompass all of these titles and more. However, I (and I assume many others) were curious as to how Leia Organa earned and balanced all these mantles. Princess of Alderaan chronicles her claim to the throne of Alderaan, her first forays into the arena of galactic politics, and her increasing involvement with the nascent Rebel Alliance.Claudia Gray imbues Leia with the same strength and grace that fans have come to expect from her through the years. Even when Leia is unsure of her next steps, the reader never doubts that she has the capability to live up to her legendary status. Writing in the voice of an iconic character must be difficult, especially in a novel where the character is still coming of age. Gray proves that she is more than up to the task.I recommend this book to anybody who has been inspired by Princess (or senator... or rebel... or General) Leia. (And for those who can't wait for The Last Jedi, there are several nuggets of information for the sharp-eyed reader!)

this book is organized well and it has good examples, explanations, an online version, good problems, structures and answer key. easy to follow as a student and as a teacher giving the lecture. I have had much worse chemistry especially organic books in terms of explaining things in a way that can be understood, not over complicated.HOWEVER... even though this book is NOT by any means the first edition, I have never seen so many errors in a book in my life; text or otherwise. there are errors in the problems, text, consistency, charges, bonds, numbers, structures, arrow pushing, reagent placement... the information is right and the references can help to figure out real discrepancies but there are just so many little errors as if the book was NEVER edited before printing, or at least not by anyone who has any kind of chemistry background. this in unacceptable for a graduate level science book! it has gotten so bad that our teacher is giving away extra credit to students who can find and correct errors by reading ahead so he can make sure to point them all out in class to prevent further problems! not complaining about the extra credit but... come on.To top it all off, this book it just heavy as hell and it's not even a hard cover (so glad I didn't have to pay extra for that, not just money but for having to carry it everywhere!) barely fits in my bag most of the time anyway.

This book was recommended by my organic chemistry professor, so I purchased it. Some of the information is over my head right now, but will surely be beneficial as I climb the academic ladder, as I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

While this text is not my favorite for advanced organic, it has a lot of examples for each section of reactions. When used in class along with the professor's guidance it is decent. I mainly don't care for the way they notate the compounds with letters, I'm more of a stick diagram person.

This book is an excellent reference on the latest developments in the theory and practice of synthetic and physical organic chemistry. As someone who did their graduate work more than 40 years ago, I found it to be a very good source of material for refreshing my knowledge of the subject.

The chapters in this book are ripe with good information that post orgo 2 chemists will find illuminating. However, the book suffers from poor editing (terrible chemdraw and errors in the problems that are new to this edition) and a mediocre writing style.

Book is great. Simply the paragon for grad students. Use this for learning and as a good resource. I hope to be crazy enough to read it cover to cover.

When Harry Harlow started exploring the science of affection it was in the face of disregard and opposition in the world of medicine and psychology. But he was able to show that affection is vital to the proper development of the newly born, as too is the measured rejection of the newly born's parents when the time is right. Consequently we now encourage the bonding of parents and children through physical handling. (Perhaps more affectionate and supportive friendships outside the family have developed as a result also.)These were great insights for society and yet Harlow did face opposition. Just when he was saying the role of the mother (and father - but he was less vocal about that) was vital to the upbringing of the baby, the womens liberation movement was trying to get women more freedom - more equality on the basis of being the same as men. How could this new emphasis on the importance of the role of parents (principally women as men were traditionally the 'bread winners') be tolerated? To me, however, there is a mistake in this. We should not be treated equally because we are the same - but for the very opposite reason - because we are all unique. If we are to get the best from each unique individual then each individual must have equal rights and opportunity. Unfortunately Harlow's approach to opposition was often rude and confronting.After his death Harlow's research faced another challenge - this time from the animal liberation activists. Harlow had done his experiments on monkeys principally, and these experiments necessarily had damaging (and surprising) results for the animals experimented on. Harlow did care for the animals and provided for them as well as he could in difficult circumstances - for example, he always tried to 'restore' emotionally damaged animals. Although we may now regret the methods he and his students used, and certainly not want to repeat them for the sake of student exercises, we should not lose sight of the vital information that was uncovered.Deborah Blum's book is engaging and revealing - especially concerning the history of human behaviour with regard to affection and love. It is surprising how recent (1950s) some attitudes were that are now totally overthrown, at least in part because of Harlow's work.But does psychology have more lessons to learn from Harlow? It is my belief that this is so. I recently had a workplace experience where I was confronted by a workplace bully. But immediately I knew this bully was not picking on me - this was just characteristic behaviour that was applied to everyone they worked with. All the stories and rumours I had heard - and continued to hear with more clarity - suddenly had greater presence for me. To overcome my distress at this situation I used the free staff counselling service offered by my employer. Perhaps in doing that I was already demonstrating my capacity to manage, to cope. What, however, of my colleagues who I now had insight to the terrible behaviour of the bully for them? Harlow would not have been surprised that I had bonded with these people - to some more closely than others. But the psychologist/counsellor understood nothing of this - as long as I was dealt with (the immediate client) nothing else could be done. But the only thing that could really be done for me was to smash all the bonds I had built with my colleagues so that I was no longer concerned for them. Was that reasonable?And what of psychology offered to one of a married couple privately from the bond that links them. What is the risk that this will actually prise apart the bond that needs to be strengthened or at least maintained? I'm not sure how psychology should handle these matters but it continues to alarm me that the insights of Harlow are still being overlooked in areas where they should not be. This is an extremely interesting book in terms of underlining how damaging scientific fads can be. The early twentieth century fad of data and cleanliness may well have led to the deaths many children as cleanliness was preferred over attention.Unfortunately, Harry Harlow is less interesting, and provides an abominable contrast to the subject. Harlow ignores both wives and his children in search for - as he wrote in his school's yearbook - 'fame'. He becomes a chain-smoking alcoholic. Bizarrely, Blum emphasises Harlow's visionary understanding of love with, at times, an almost 'here comes superman' manner. She appears incapable of reconciling her argument that Harlow is the scientist of love with the fact that he ignored his wives and all his children!If anything, I read the book as reflecting one man's selfish, desperate desire for achievement and fame. Thanks to his interest in monkeys, he and his students seemed to fall over the answer. Not exactly visionary.A good read though, reflecting the pitfalls of faddish thinking, and also how scientific discoveries (if the fact that a child needs its mother is a discovery) occur. The book also reflects how difficult it can be to refute incorrect arguments.

I was wondering what love was since I have never felt love in my life. This thought first came from a religious perspective which states that without love you have nothing. I don't think that I have any ability to love. I bonded with my father rather than my mother, but this was a very limited relationship because just as I had never seen an example of familial love, neither had my parents. I kept reaching out to my father but with no success.I have a good memory of my early childhood, and this book reinforced what I had already suspected. While I took the blame for all of their disappointments in me, it was they who made me what I was.I lived to get away from my mother. And I had decided by the time that I graduated from high school that I could not put another child through what I had been through. I would have been exactly like her because I had never seen an example of a child being loved.My mother did not want to be a mother. This book explains why I am the way that I am today, anxious and isolated and not being able to socialize.The learning disabilities that I had were monumental, but at least I lived during a time where I was not labeled.I scored poorly on the Stanford Binet test and overheard my mother say to my dad that she guessed that I would never amount to nothing.This book is so important, and if it makes women feel guilty, so be it. How the mother treats the child determines the child's future.I love animals, and the thought of using them for testing makes me sick. But if testing animals will make people understand what they are doing to their children, it is worth it and PETA be damned.

I am a 6th grade teacher, teaching a self-contained classroom so I was looking for both ELA and Math review books. This one is great because it provides you with both. However, as an educator in NY, I felt like it wasn't quite as good at preparing students for the NY assessment as the NYReady books. I recommended this book to parents as a nice supplementary resource, while using the NYReady books as the main resource for classroom practice/practice tests. The answer keys included in this Barron's book have explanations as to why an answer is correct, which parents really appreciated.

The English sections are great and I will continue to use them. The math problems, on the other hand, are way too complicated and just plain boring. My students didn't like the math at all.

Not enough practice work. It is not a workbook - or rather barely a workbook.

This book is a really good practice for the Common Core State exams. It goes over all the standards. It is a really good buy.

I bought my daughter this and the Grade 5 book, so that she could become familiar with the type of questions she will encounter on the Common Core test. She transitioned from private to public school and was nervous about what to expect. She is enjoying the practice and it is reducing her test anxiety.

This past year I was looking for a book that help prepare me for what was going to be on the Common Core test. This book did just that! I wish I would have bought it earlier in the year and used it all year long. It has practice sheets and a practice test. The examples are relevant and has helpful tips and vocabulary throughout.
