I have read all of the biographies they have put out to date. I enjoyed each one for the individuality. But, let's face it. The time they are writing about was all drugs and alcohol so how much can they even remember?The book did a great job of laying out his childhood and how he felt the earlier years of GNR went down. Sometimes, it feels like he is trying to take credit for very minor things just to say he made a contribution (talking them out of doing the glam for instance). His accounts of their maiden trip and events differ greatly from the others. Even his mentions of the Farm Aid incident just don't add up. It is very interesting to read about all of the things that occurred and be able to check them out on YouTube moments after.I'd definitely recommend this book for any GNR fan. But, if you are were only going to read one, I'd def go with Duff's. Adler has admittedly had a tough run of it since getting kicked out of the band, but he does seem to be humbled at this point.

It's difficult to limit my review to the BOOK instead of the AUTHOR because honestly I want so badly to discuss his obvious personal themes throughout his book such as the fact that he comes across so painfully and pathetically irresponsible and unintelligent with his blatant misguidance etc etc. I will instead try to refrain from delving into his personal issues and convey my feelings about this book. It is definitely honest and sincere though painful at times because you feel sorry for this poor fool and lost soul.The book is written in an almost child-like manner so he must have surely written it himself as I'm sure a ghost writer would have come across sounding a little more mature and professional. At times it really did seem like a kid was writing it- telling you pointless random stories...(It literally almost reads like this: "There was this one time in London and there was this scary guy and I thought he looked scary so I got scared but it turned out he was okay and I went home and was really relieved!") The book is full of these kinds of "stories."Several times throughout I thought he could have spared us the details of the hookers and porn stars and groupies doing various vulgar things to each other and to him. We know all about sex, drugs and rock-n-roll so no real need to give us all the details. (That was one thing I appreciated about Adler's former bandmate Duff McKagan's book was that he at least kept it a little classier and didn't delve into all the sexual specifics. Some things could be kept private.)Steven Adler's book also gives us all the druggy details of life in a rock band. One seriously has to wonder though if he really is rehabilitated. He even admits that you'd be delusional in thinking that hitting all these horrendous lows would render his lesson learned. This book is definitely entertaining though tragic because rarely do you see how rock and roll devours some poor lost souls. Most of the tell-all rock star auto-bios now end with how well they are doing and how successful they are with rock music and their sobriety etc. However, this book never kids us into thinking all is now well with the protagonist. He still has many battles to fight and many demons to conquer. Even he knows that conquering them may not be in the cards. It was rather chilling when he admitted that sometimes the only way to escape addiction is to die. How profound and tragic. But I am going on about his life instead of his work...I enjoyed this book because it was entertaining but as I write that I see how weird it is to find someone's tragedy "entertaining." It wasn't necessarily enjoyable entertaining but interesting entertainment. I did gain some understanding about this person and I have a new-found respect and admiration for him after reading his story. I appreciate his desire to paint a true and sincere portrait of his life. His book is an honest look at his struggle with addiction and a humble tribute to his former bandmates. I found it in poor taste though to air out his dirty laundry involving his mother. For no real reason he states he currently hates her. The book should have left this out. At any rate, I wish him well and thank him for such an honest portrait of a rock and roll life gone severely astray. This makes for a good read whether you are a Guns-n-Roses fan or not. If you enjoy reading about rock stars' lives complete with all the necessary evils- sex, drugs and rock-n-roll- then you will be satisfied with this.

Having read Slash's biography then Duff's memoirs, it was only inevitable that I would eventually read Adler's. Of the three, I would say that I enjoyed Slash's the most. Adler's book comes off as being fairly repetitive with virtually the same drug-debauchery tale told countless times with only slight variations. I guess such is the nature of severe substance addiction. Possibly the more sobering notion is that in this book, Adler does not come off as a likable character; rather, he comes off someone stuck at the adolescent stage of development. He makes no qualms or apologies for this self-awareness. Regardless, it is still an entertaining read, particularly if you want to know more about the stories behind Appetite for Destruction.

Lots of honest self deprecation. Many times you just have to wonder why his appreciation of his self destruction took so long to arrive. The levels of physical self harm he endured repeatedly seem beyond comprehension. Overall quite well written. Seemed to end quite abruptly.

this was a very good book i would recommend it for sure especially if you're a GNR fan like i am. i have read duff & slash's memoirs & they were both really good reads. i liked duffs best out of the 3 books. i thought steven was very honest in his portrayal of his addictions & many mistakes he has made in his life. he still needs to truly be more honest w/himself about his addictions & reasons he cannot seem to get himself sober & stay that way for good. he seems to wanna blame others for his problems & some of the bad things that have happened to him especially when it comes to his musical career w/GNR & his eventually being fired from the band. i truly understand his struggles w/addiction & can empathize w/his deeply hurt feelings that came from his getting fired from the band he helped co-found when he was just a teenage kid w/his best friends especially since everyone in the band had major drug/alcohol issues & none of them were being fired for their drug/alcohol usage when they were really just as messed up as steven was they were just handling it a little tiny bit better than he was at the time. i hope steven is staying sober since he was last on celebrity rehab w/dr drew & that he can actually make it last this time bcuz he really truly seems like a good guy w/a heart of gold he just has some emotional scars that need healed. :) plz read its well worth it.

Steven doesn't leave anything out. Even the stuff most people would never admit to doing. Proves that love for music can overrule love for drugs.Great stories of Sunset Strip in the good old bad old days& the start of GNR. A cautionary tale & great read. Bravo 2 Steven, who knew you were a great writer as well as a drummer!

Everyone cried when we got this book from the library, it was such a great story even the adults were rooting for the lion. nice pictures as well.

One of my daughter's favorites. We checked this out of the library and she loves it so much we had to get out own copy. She frequently tells me this story even when we're not reading it...like at the dinner table. Nice illustrations. It's a longer story though...several paragraphs per page on most pages. Doesn't phase my 3 yr old but I know not everyone has that kind of attention span (and not every parent wants to spend 10 minutes per book at bedtime...lol). Sweet story about making new friends, helping others, and how sometimes it's ok to break the rules when you have a really good reason.

This story is filled with beautiful, touching illustrations which perfectly match the writing style, messages and theme of this book. It reinforces the joy of reading and going to the library for children or even introduces them to this important place that should be part of all children's lives. The story and voice or feel of this story along with the illustrations holds the attention of children as young as 2 and the older child as well. They enjoy thinking about how fun it would be to have a soft, gentle lion to lean against as they read their books. And there is an important message about how to learn and obey rules that are necessary but in special situations they need to be not followed.

I love this book and cry at the end every time I read it because it is so touching and beautiful. I read it to all my kids when they were younger and I give it as a present often. This year we gave a copy to my daughter's teacher for her class and she wrote to me "Thank you does not do justice to how my heart feels. I love this book so much. I read it every year to my class to teach empathy, friendship, and second chances." She is exactly right.

Regardless of how highly rated this book is, it worried and scared my 4 yr old granddaughter, as well as made her sad the first time we read it.She was fine the second time we read it, but I have no use for a book like this. Into the donation box it goes.

One day, a lion wandered into Miss Merriweather's library. He began sniffing around and soon found the story hour corner, where he proceeded to sit and listen to the story along with the children. He liked listening to the story, but he let out a loud roar when it was finished. This lead to a reprimand about no loud noises in the library. The next day, the lion was back and was more well-behaved. Soon, the lion had become a sort of library mascot, helping with such things as dusting the encyclopedias, licking envelopes, and serving as a pillow for the children during story time. All of this was to the dismay of circulation desk attendant Mr. McBee, who felt that the library was no place for a lion.Later on, Miss Merriweather was shelving books with the lion when she slipped off of her stool and fell to the ground. The lion tried to help, but couldn't figure out what was wrong. He ran to Mr.McBee's office and roared as loud as he could to get his attention. Instead of seeing what was wrong, he scolded the lion and sent him out of the library. Mr. McBee went to Miss Merriweather's office to find her laying on the floor. Miss Merriweather got her arm fixed by the doctor, but the lion, dejected by Mr. McBee's yelling, once again left the library. Miss Merriweather became sad that the lion had stopped coming again. Mr. McBee sensed Miss Merriweather's sadness and went looking for the lion. He explained to the lion that he still shouldn't roar in the library except in case of an emergency. Happily, the lion came back to the library and everyone, including Mr. McBee, was happy that he did.My daughter received this book as a Christmas gift and she loves it. The pictures are bright and detailed, and the story is interesting. Being a librarian myself, I can only imagine what I would think if a lion walked through my door. I only hope that if one did, he would be as nice and helpful as the one in this story.I give this book my highest recommendation. It's easy to see why it has won various children's book awards. The message that it carries is a good one, too; sometimes, it is ok to break the rules.

This delightful story starts off simply: "One day, a lion came to the library." No one is sure what to do, since there are no rules about lions and libraries. Nevertheless, the lion settles in nicely, once he agrees to follow the "no roaring" rule. He regularly attends the story hour, and helps Miss Merriweather, the librarian, by dusting the encyclopedias, licking the envelopes for overdue notices, and letting children stand on his back so they can reach books on the highest shelves.One day, Miss Merriweather falls from a step stool and breaks her arm, and the lion must roar to bring help. The poor beast now thinks that since he has broken the rules, he'll no longer be welcome, but then finds out that sometimes there's a good reason to break the rules, even in the library.Michelle Knudsen's gentle, sweet, funny story combines beautifully with Kevin Hawkes' expressive, animated, warm illustrations, to create a lovely, cozy tribute to libraries that shows children what a marvelous, comfortable, fun place the library can be. This book is a natural for story hours, and also an enjoyable tale for children who are just learning to read. This enchanting book is likely to be a children's classic for years to come.

This was one of my teen daughter’s favorites when she was little. Our cat used to like to sit with us when we read on the sofa, so we had our very own “library lion.” This book is funny and touching. When I read this book, I had no idea what to expect. I had read the basic description, and it sounded interesting enough, but then I purchased the book and from page one it was different than anything I've ever read. I assure you it is different than anything you have ever read as well!It immediately begins with Todd Hewitt the main character, and introduces us to a world where every thought in each characters heads are audible to everyone—including the animals. Ness refers to this as ‘noise.’In order to write this style effectively, the ‘noise’ doesn’t match font or format. The type overlaps, some is larger than other, and it creates a visual noise on the page to match the audible noise to the characters.The book is placed in the young adult genre, but this as much due to the main character’s age as the audience. It handles very heavy themes in a mature manner, and doesn’t condescend to its audience.The book is not just interesting format and concept, but also a very intelligently written, immediately captivating story of Todd and his dog and a new friend he meets when he runs away from his home.This was one of the few times I was actually unable to put the book down and when I finished reading it, I immediately needed to purchase the second in the trilogy.In a time where we’re being inundated by Young Adult novels and series about dystopic societies it is refreshing to read something truly unique, which doesn’t sacrifice any quality in that uniqueness.If you enjoy the Young Adult or Science Fiction genres, I would strongly recommend this book. It is deep, fun, makes intelligent statements about society—as all good Sci-fi should— and has believable, and relatable characters within a scenario that is unlike anything you’ve ever read or experienced.

I'm only about two thirds of the way through The Knife of Never Letting Go, but I absolutely adore this book. Patrick Ness is an outstanding writer. He is a master of the dictum of "show don't tell." He is also very adept at character development. It didn't take too long before I fell in love with the character of Todd. Todd is a very damaged character, but that quality endears him to the reader. Of course, I cannot imagine any reader not falling in love with Manchee, Todd's dog.There is a great deal of background to the story, but Ness takes his time revealing that background, giving the reader the chance to discover it slowly and naturally. His use of language is outstanding, sometimes poetic, but always immediate enough to appeal to young readers as well as readers my age (68).Working with young people for whom this book is directed, I know they love series books. They dislike having to let go of the characters they have fallen in love with. However, I'm not a fan of series books, but the Chaos Walking series, of which The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first part, is a notable exception. I'm going to read the next book in the series after finishing The Knife of Never Letting Go.I highly recommend this book not only to the ages for which is intended but for any adult who appreciates well-written, engaging fiction.

What I thought was going to be a tough book to get into. . . turned into a book I couldn't put down.If I'm honest I read this because one of my favorite actors is going to be Todd in the film adaptation.So, I read simply because of that...I was not expecting but hoping, a great read. I hadn't heard anything about the book which I think is sad with how good it turned out. Patrick Ness is a great writer. I'm actually worried about how the film will turn out because I love this book. I love Todd and I love Viola...mostly...I mean I haven't finished the series yet... I'm slacking partly because I don't want it to end and Ness can break your heart so... yeah take that as you will. It's a lot of traveling and action with little romance... if any. Be Prepared is all I'm gonna say. It's a crazy ride.

I picked up this book because I read that it was being made into a movie. Typically books are better than movies, for me anyway, because you get to see what goes on inside the characters' heads. This is the first in a series of books that follow two young teens on an alien planet.The main character in this book is a young boy. 12, almost 13, by their alien years. More like 14 plus in earth years. He lives in a small town full of men. Only men. He believes that it is the only group of people on the entire planet. After a sickness kills his mother, he is raised by two men in that town on a farm. Oh, and everyone can hear what everyone else is thinking all the time. The animals talk as well. He has a dog that he is not too happy to have. That is his entire life summed up right there. The same thing, day and in day out. Until it isn't. He meets our other main character. A girl. Shocking on q planet with nothing but the men of his town on the whole thing. His world, what he believes to he true and right, begin to implode from that point and gets worse as the book goes on. He has to grapple with what he has been taught and what he is seeing. She has to learn to live on a world where men's thoughts spill into the air like a breath and unusual creatures survive.Sounds good, right? Eh. Most of the creatures are pretty normal. There are some unusual ones. They all talk, but crickets and crocs arent really a stretch of the imagination. I doubt the settlers brought crocs to repopulate an alien planet, so these are native crocs. Funny how they have the same animals we have. Little things like that bothered me about the story. We have a villain, but not once does it talk about how he does what he does. Doesn't seem very scary either. Power hungry? Sure. Why though does he have the boys do what they do to become men? What does that do for him? More things bother me but I cant say without it being a spoiler. The priest seems to be superhuman. No reason why given.The girl and the boy go along meeting people and learning things throughout the book. They spend most of their time running or hiding. It should feel exciting. For some reason, it doesn't. At least for me it didn't. It felt like something was missing. The something that draws you in and makes you stay up way too late to find out what happens next. It also seemed very short. I read this book in a couple of hours. I'm a fairly fast reader, but I expected it to feel longer. It's almost 500 pages, but it felt like 200.It's well edited. It does have misspellings but that is absolutely on purpose. I believe it's to show how uneducated he is and to differentiate his from the girl in future books.I don't know what is missing, but I feel like something is. For me at least. I will not be reading the rest of the series.
