Zavrel presents essential fundamental theory and explanation that underpins all of the practical antenna designs found in the many amateur radio texts. The mathematics is straightforward and even the explanation of Maxwell's equations is understandable and useful and shouldn't be an obstacle to anyone with an interest in radio communications and antennas. I really like this book and the author's style.
I have several very thorough books and resources that explain antenna theory, but even the best of them are missing the mark by writing in a style that's sometimes hard for the layman to comprehend. This book has a lot of science in it, but is very easy to "get" and also goes into the math some, if that's what you like. It doesn't have "projects", but will give you a solid understanding and practical design info if you really want to understand how antennas actually do what they do!
Everything you ever wanted to know about antennas and how they work. Not for the math-challenged, but the author does a good job of taking some of the mystery out of that, too. I guarantee you'll never look at your antenna the same way again.
Kindle, especially on windows handles the formulas badly. I ordered the paper book for this reason and will give that five stars. In over 40 years of interest, I've never seen a text this good on the subject. It is "Introductory" once one understands just how far the topic goes. Other books that could be considered introductory, leave out the science and math or use analogy that can be misleading. Either that or they are simply cook books for various types of antennas. This one explains the physics from fundamentals and does it better than any other. However, it is by no means light reading. The book is written so that one can gloss over the math and understand the overall ideas. This is what makes it really introductory. The book derives practical equations from James Clerk Maxwell's calculus but one can just use the practical equations without diving deep into Maxwell. So it is introductory relative to the overall subject of electromagnetism from electrical circuits, but that may be more than some are ready for. Just give it a go. Even if you don't master it, you will learn a lot.
A little dry, but overall, a good read. Lots of good information inside. I really enjoyed digging in to how the physics of an antenna work. I think once I've read it again a couple times, it will really help me with future antenna plans and with understanding NEC modeling.
Downside first...Several typos and grammatical issues. I can live with it, should be corrected in revisions. Seems like the author got tongue tied.I would have made ch 10 one of the first chapters. My preference as the review put calculus in a frame of understanding is better at times than learning how to. Wish more high school math teachers would try this. When I teach, I advise the students I do not want them to do any math, I just want them to understand....after presenting the concept they breeze thru a Q&A session and come up with the answer. Sometimes teachers unknowingly make things harder.
This is a very readable text on a subject that can be complex and difficult. I'm only about a fourth of the way through it but it has helped with providing an understanding of the antenna from the standpoint of aperture.
I’ve yet to finish, liking what I’ve read so far, but must mention, the equations in the Kindle version are, too small to read with the naked eye; very frustrating.
