It includes "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry; "The Fir Tree" and "The Little Match Girl," both by Hans Christian Andersen; "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens; "A Christmas Dream" by Louisa May Alcott; "The Christmas Angel" by Abbie Farwell Brown; "Little Gretchen and the Wooden Shoes" and "A Story of the Child," both by Elizabeth Harrison.Then comes a section called "Interlude: The Night Before Christmas." Not a bad little collection - the usual Dickens and O. Henry but at least a third of the book is made up of moralizing tales by obscure authors from the late 19th-early 20th century. If that's your thing, then you're in luck, but for those of us hoping for a little more rollicking or genuinely moving stories, the book is a bit of a disappointment.
Some of the stories are fine but it is not a book that calls me back to read it again. Some books you hate to put down, this one I could but down!
A Christmas Carol has been abridged in this version.
In this kindle version - having trouble navigating it- unattractive, unprofessional layout. I was looking forward to enjoying the selections but have not been able to.
Out of the 50 I would rate quite a few 5 stars, quite a few 4 stars, a handful of them 3 stars, and maybe 5 or 6 that I would skip in a reread. Overall I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys holiday stories. Enjoyable for all ages.
Great for reading during the holidays. We enjoyed them. I read out loud and my husband listened. We enjoyed them.
These old stories give one a idea of truths valued in times past. Good for reading to children or adults.
