Despite my long pedigree of managing to finish "difficult" or "complicated" books I always tend to approach certain literary figures with some trepidation, since as I've learned long ago, finishing a book isn't quite the same thing as understanding what you just read and while everyone has to bring their own interpretations to everything they experience, I always have this nagging fear when reading works of literary merit that large portions of it are not only going over my head, its waving to astronauts orbiting the planet who are thinking to themselves, "How can he not see all the thematic implications in the layers of historical allusions?"Borges is one of those writers that I've always looked forward to reading but sort of mentally approached with caution, not sure if I'd be fully able to appreciate all the philosophical and historical references that he threw into his stories without either having a degree in literature or at least a better background in Latin American history that I currently possess. Couple that with a tendency on Borges' part to lean toward a sort of proto-magical realism and you've got a recipe for me scratching my head for five hundred pages almost positive that I'm reading very close to a genius level of writing and story construction but its like asking me to describe in great detail how the harmonious elements of a Michelangelo sculpture all intersect when viewed as a whole. My response, in both cases, I expected to be, I haven't the faintest clue, it just looks nice.Fortunately there isn't much to worry about. Borges is, if nothing else, a playful writer and while I can't be sure I got even ten percent of what he was attempting to convey to me in a psuedo-magically realistic form, he's more than capable of giving you story after story that exists almost as a fable, telling a story but also illustrating whatever philosophical point he's attempting to make. Read purely for surface pleasures, the stories stand just fine . . . start delving into the meat of what he's really trying to say and they begin to unfold with fascinating depth. This collection contains all his short stories (other books tackle his poems and non-fiction essays for those so inclined), organized by the original collections and one of the nice things about the semi-chronological approach is that not only do you get to see his style evolve but also his focus over time as he toys with different types of tales and genres, even dipping into fantasy more than once. He's an easy writer to read, with a dense style that's almost conversational in how its presented. more often than not coming across as a tale being told to you by the writer instead of as a story you're reading. He's a big fan of unconventional words but not so much that I had to keep running to a dictionary every other page. What I probably would suggest to anyone wanting to do a deep dive into Borges is brush up on Argentinian history to a basic extent . . . I didn't and the numerous references to battles and historical events may cause you to stop dead or at least miss the context of what the story is trying to do. If nothing else, it may behoove you to get a passing familiarity with epic 19th century poem "Martin Fierro", which gets referenced so often you'd think Borges had it tattooed on his body somewhere (all kidding aside, its super famous in Argentina and probably one of those things that all schoolkids have to memorize . . . needless to say, it influenced an entire generation of writers). But with all the requisite background research out of the way, the best way to appreciate Borges is to read the stories themselves, which are maddeningly consistent in quality and strikingly different even when he seems to be going for the same idea at several different angles. I found the first collection ("A Universal History of Iniquity") to be embryonic with its details of historical figures with certain details changed. Its a good example of what you're in for . . . he's going to give you enough details so that you'll recognize it as true but the changes are where the key lies and figuring out why he changed it could open up a whole new interpretation of the person in question.Still, as fun as those are for the people among us who enjoy literary games for me the real Borges didn't start until the "Fictions" collection. Here the real fascinations start and before long you've delving into worlds where labyrinths are commonplace, gauchos are so numerous you might trip over one if you don't look where you've going and perceptions of time and space are either not what they seem or can be altered by someone who tries really, really hard. Fantasy fans may find themselves on more solid ground here, between tales like "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" (also known as "The Encyclopedia That Took Over the World" and so dense that it seems like analysis of the story is longer than the story itself) and the famous "Garden of Forking Paths" (entertaining on first read but probably requires both rereading and more background to really sink into the ideas the story is pondering) but already he has this gift of taking strange concepts and rendering them in a tone both calm and uneasy, conveying them in such a matter of fact way that some almost come across as scholarly essays about being trapped in hypothetical libraries based on mathematical philosophies.Yet none of these come off as dry. Throughout the book his tendencies to mix fact and fiction, fable and reality, drama and philosophy allow for an experience both thoughtful and entertaining. Basically, you come for the story about standing in a spot in some random basement allows you to see all of existence at once but stay for the philosophical implications the tale uncovers ("The Aleph", another of the more famous tales). One aspect that struck me on reading them was how concise he was being despite having to often pack a wealth of information into a very limited space. A collection from 1960 called "Makers" is extraordinary in how he manages to conjure entire worlds in a series of stories that are only a page or two each, sometimes acting more as prose poems than traditional stories. He makes it work and he did for it seems his entire career. Later stories like "The Book of Sand" almost seem like Lovecraft stories if good ol HP was interested more in intellectual musings than tentacles, as in this case where an infinite book from nowhere apparently seeks to drive men mad. In fact, for a friendly Latin American fellow he seems to enjoy stories where irrational objects do irrational things and nearly drive someone nuts in the process, with "The Disk", "Blue Tigers" and "Shakespeare's Memory" all having the same premise of an impossible thing not working out well for anyone involved. It all adds up to one heck of a career. Considering how many stories there are in the book (most not long at all although they certainly aren't light reads) its amazing to see how few even "average" stories he has in here . . . in every tale there's an interesting scenario to ponder, a fascinating angle on an idea put forth, a number of interesting turns of phrase. There's wonder and a little bit of horror and a lot of musing on memory and the nature of stories. I can't say its for everyone but as far as esoteric things go, its got a broader potential audience than almost everything else I've read. For people who like fables, who like fantasies, who like stories that don't go on for fifty pages, who like philosophy in a palatable form, who like authors that like to be both serious and have fun. There are probably smaller collections of Borges out there, so maybe a person on the fence might not want to dive into the whole kaboodle but the thing is you could have ten people assemble a "Best Of" and beyond a few key stories probably get ten different lineups . . . he's that varied and that consistent so there's really no reason if you're interested in this kind of thing to not go whole hog and worst case pick and choose instead of plowing through like I did (probably the smarter idea, as if it gives you more time to let the stories sink in . . . but I have a large backlog so there's no time for dallying). The best of these stories stick with you immediately while the remainder linger in the subconscious, emerging as slightly new ways of seeing, not so much like getting new glasses as realizing you had the right lenses the whole time, it was only the world that needed to be adjusted.

This is something very hard to find, almost by definition: a literary writer who thinks in abstract terms (the only other such author I've read is Stanislaw Lem). These are philosophical thought experiments in their purest form, yet somehow magically delivered in a playful literary athmosphere. Borges is a mathematical philosopher, first and last. Ignore the "Latin American" categorization and the nonsense about his background and personal life: one should resist embedding him in a socio-cultural framework; he is as universal as they come. It is good to read a short story once in a while to see how literature and philosophy can be saved by the parable.

Those words were written on my Amazon Marketplace receipt from Blue Leaf Books by someone with the initials EDG, along with a thank you for ordering the book on March 23, 2017. In fact, I did avoid the labyrinth for almost two years because I knew it would be quite a challenge. I had first “read” Borges’ “Labyrinths” as a 20-year-old. I’m sure I could not have understood any of it at that time. But the years have passed (I won’t say how many) and, fortunately, I decided this was the year that I would make the effort to read Borges’ Collected Fictions, beginning to end, slowly. Near the end of the book, I found myself going back through the pages and finding stories I wanted to read again right away. As one excellent reviewer (Michael Battaglia) wrote, “finishing a book isn't quite the same thing as understanding what you just read,” and this is one book I feel must be read several times. Each time, you will understand more, but you will have the feeling that yet another reading will give you still more understanding. I found it amusing that one of the last stories, “Blue Tigers,” included the following sentence: “I did not sleep the night of Feb. 10.” I was reading this particular story during the afternoon of Feb. 11. Was Borges playing with my mind? I’ve since ordered a copy of Borges’ selected non-fiction and poetry. One must NOT avoid the labyrinth.

An anthology of Borges short stories. It's absolutely fantastic; I bought this for a class, and though the class is over I am keeping this book.

As good as it gets when it comes to the short story. The writing is spare, says only what's needed to make the story flow. No excess, no flowery displays of the author's skill. Refreshing...

Borges was an author I always figured I ought to read but who sounded too hifalutin for me to like it. Then I read "The Immortal," one of the stories, in a book store and I was hooked. The stories I enjoyed were like Umberto Eco, except the ideas were often a little weirder (which made them more interesting), and Borges doesn't go on at boring length the way Eco does sometimes. This is an advantage of the short story form.

I discovered Jorge Luis Borges, not through some literature class, or from other post-modern writers. Instead I discovered his work through science fiction. His weird worlds often have, inadvertently, a science fiction flavor, and it is several of his stories that have appeared in science fiction story anthologies that I first learned about this most unusual writer. I was disappointed to see just how scattershot his work was, however, until the publication of this latest and complete translation. They are all here--the stories that introduced me to his work..."The Library of Babel" "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbius Teritus" and others. And many stories I had never heard of...or ever seen more than a mention of. It's a hefty volume, but if you like writers like Umberto Eco, or simply want doses of something other than our mundane banal reality, Borges' work, sadly and idiotically ignored for a Nobel prize, is worth a try. And this volume, the complete and definitive collection of his stories, is the one and only book you need purchase.

Apparently it is important for readers of this book to know a smattering of CSS and also have a general understanding of javascript, because they are both used in this book in such a way that the author assumes you have a fair understanding of each language. This is not an introduction to HTML, but more of an supplemental missing manual to the proper HTML missing manual that might have been written in another universe. From the beginning of CHAPTER TWO: "If your CSS skills are so rusty that you need a tetanus shot before you can crack open a style sheet, then you're not quite ready for this chapter. Fortunately, Appendix A, "Essential CSS" has a condensed introduction that covers the fundamentals." Have you been wondering whether the chicken or the egg came first? Well this tip leads me to believe that it was the egg that I should have read about initially. What is also kind of annoying about this book is that much of the code which the author has deemed unnecessary (too costly) to print must be found in the accompanying missing manual website. Download the code and view it while reading through the book so that you have some idea of how/why some things work... or if you actually want to try and type out the code yourself. Then, there are the snippets of code from the book which don't seem to work properly in either Chrome or Firefox. As of this writing, Google's Chrome browser seems to enjoy a market share of over sixty percent. So, then the reader must go wandering the internet for an example of the code from some random blogger which does work properly. The book has a section in chapter five, which deals with the

The Missing Manual Series is excellent. My college course in CSS used the Missing Manual, and it was so good that when I decided I needed to get a bit more solid with my HTML, it was a natural to pick up their book on the subject.

The Missing Manual series is the best group of reference manuals I've found. Every one has been a tremendous help. And - nobody has given me any freebies. This is the "paid for with my own cash" opinion.

The book is written in a clear, concise manner with many examples to support the text.

I have read about two chapters thus far, and it is very easy to understand. The examples are simple to follow. It is a great book to have.

Product is very good condition.

Very easy read and well put together and organized. Has either links to or sections in appendix for not-central but essential information. Lots of links to helpful sites. Lots of details on how to work around browsers that don't support new features. Uses very good introduction -> details -> example -> summary style writing that makes learning efficient. I fully recommend it and will look for other "missing manual" books.Me: software engineer with 15 years of hobby website development experience, but still a amateur with website design.

good book for starters, maybe needs some more code examples, thank you

The Great Super Cycle: Profit from the Coming Inflation Tidal Wave and Dollar Devaluation, by David Skarica

From the Inside Flap

Due to the massive taxpayer bailout of financial institutions and the ongoing expense of conflicts around the world, the U.S. government's financial situation has rapidly deteriorated during this economic downturn. Today, the federal government is at the whim of Wall Street, socialist-leaning politicians, lobbyists, and special interests. Before the current system can change, we need another collapse. This will only happen when the debt bubble finally bursts. The Great Super Cycle: Profit from the Coming Inflation Tidal Wave and Dollar Devaluation looks at what we can expect in global economics by looking at the history of political shifts in power. The underlying theme is that everything moves in cycles—from the mega-cycle of world powers, to economic cycles that can last decades, to mini-cycles that last ten to twenty years. According to author David Skarica, cycles are the most important and also the most powerful tool we have to make money in the coming years from the inevitable debt bubble and resulting economic shift. The market will move much lower in the coming years in inflation-adjusted terms. The key in this environment is to be invested in sectors that will outperform. This forward-thinking text examines key sectors such as gold, oil, and the growing Asian markets and how investors can profit from them. With the federal government all but running some of the nation's banks, mortgage companies, and automobile manufacturers, the United States is becoming increasingly socialistic. Skarica believes that more regulation and taxes will make the U.S. economy less competitive and will cause funds to move offshore. The Great Super Cycle is an intriguing look at economic power shifting and the relationship between Washington, Wall Street, and the rest of the world.

PRAISE FOR The Great Super Cycle "Dave Skarica is wise beyond his years. He is thorough in his research, positive in his outlook and never sinks to spreading fear or bearish sentiment as so many other writers do to sell their books and newsletters. A thoroughly recommended read."—DOMINIC FRISBY, Presenter, Frisby's Bulls and Bears "The Great Super Cycle covers plenty of ground, from financial history, to cyclical patterns, to the reasons why the U.S. dollar and U.S. bonds are headed towards collapse. And Dave Skarica acts as your guide in the dangerous world of hyperinflation, and he can help you to sidestep the pitfalls, and invest your way to financial independence."—MICHAEL HAMPTON, founder of the popular chatboard, GlobalEdgeInvestors.com "The twentieth century was called the American century and all an investor had to do was buy U.S. stocks, sit on them, and get rich. In a changing world with the rise of emerging markets, inflation, and a less attractive U.S. dollar, investors now have to think outside the box to make money. Global cycles expert Dave Skarica provides the road map to doing just that in this exciting book." —MICHAEL SWANSON, WallStreetWindow.com; author of Strategic Stock Trading "David Skarica's latest book confirms that a 'buy and hold' investment strategy doesn't work anymore. He explains why a proactive investment strategy is needed. His book highlights how U.S. dollars are best invested to take advantage of cycles that are expected to influence equity market returns well into the current decade."—DON VIALOUX, CMT, past president and current Director of the Canadian Society of Technical Analysts

If you could only read one book this year, or for the rest of your life, you have to read this one. This isn't another book on the upcoming economic collapse of the developed world, nor is it another 'I told you this was going to happen' book.David Skarica is very agnostic as to the what directions various markets are headed in the future. He only knows that they will follow certain macro trends that have occurred in the past and there is nothing you can do about except to follow the trend. He cites a ton of historic patterns and how they will repeat in our near future. He also points out how the current economic conditions will help these patterns come to fruition.Once you have this knowledge in hand, he goes on to explain the best way to profit from these supercycle trends. The biggest difference between this book and other supercycle books is that the author is more positive about the future. There is no doom and gloom, only that these cycles occur throughout history. You can either ignore them or take advantage of them to preserve your wealth and stay ahead of the investing crowd.Best book that I have read on this subject.

Skarica shares some useful observations with no claim that they are not proprietary to him, without trying to scare you or sell you. Kind of nice in a financial guru. His matter-of-fact analysis of the upcoming inflation is nothing new. Makes sense, and agrees with many others ("This Time It's Different," for one) His analysis of what to do about it is refreshing. Basically1) Keep your shirt on. The world isn't ending, just shifting2) Things whose value float with currency, stocks and especially commodities, will come through one way or another3) For a number of historical reasons, commodities look better for the next few years, but4) Keep your eyes open, because the past is not an infallable guide. He offers some good advice on vehicles for investing.

This book helped sweep away some of the investment noise that we are all exposed to from television talking heads, investment gurus, etc. Skarica writes plainly and yet in depth, so that the average small investor can understand where the economy is heading for the next five years....an important horizon, especially for those of us on the cusp of retirement, where we must make a decent return and, yet, avoid serious losses. I would recommend this book to almost anyone interested in investing today....

What a hilarious review by "Mart", to paraphrase: "I didn't read the book, but here's what I think about it." Followed by a tangential rant completely unrelated to the book.Well, I DID read the book, and I advise anybody who wants to preserve and grow their wealth in the years to come to do the same. For some people, there is nothing in this book that they may not already know (the unsustainable debt bubble, the unsustainable monetary regime, etc). But what may be new or interesting even to people who are well versed in these concepts is the historical context Skarica puts around a lot of these issues. To be sure, Skarica talks about certain things that are still unwelcome topics in polite company. With a matter-of-fact objectiveness he discusses the coming collapse of the US dollar and prospect of a bankrupt USA and why the current obsession among policy-makers with deflation is a red-herring.Here's a riddle: how can the stock market go up while the real economy flounders? Answer: Inflation. The trick will be investing in the right sectors to ride out the coming inflationary cycle. For more book reviews, check out my reviews section on [...]

Dave Skarica has been writing long enough via books and newsletters for his theses to be held up against time. Once again the proof is in the pudding. His calls and his knowledge of Cycles has added an important and simple edge to my investing strategy. In other words, Dave Skarica is just plain right. Although I am an active trader, this book just highlights that for investors and traders alike it is important to get in on the trend as early as possible and stay with it, on the long side. His book is also replete with research, charts, ratios , graphs and market history that backs up the Great Super Cycle theory. And this is one theory that works well in practice too!I especially like the use of very simple ratios when trying to figure out when to sell or buy oil, gas, natural gas and various other commodities. Using Skarica's cycles analysis will take the guess work out of investing, where the markets sit in relation to politics/economics and how to capitalize in relation to those set ups! Very good book, should be required reading for those in or about to enter the markets!

Very good investment book gets into future world demand (almost insatiable) and how to profit. Wish he would do an update every year on this excellent book.

Clear, concise appraisal of the state of our economy at the end of 2010. Makes the confusing signals put out by the pundits understandable and explains what is really going on. Highly recommended!

(Long sigh.)Sabaa did it again. A Torch Against the Night is...perfect. There is nothing I can say against it. There are plenty of things I HATED while reading it - but it was only because MY HEART WAS HURTING SO MUCH BECAUSE OF THE TERRIBLE THINGS THAT WERE HAPPENING! But they were terrible things that NEEDED to happen! So I couldn't be mad!So in this book, which starts MERE MOMENTS AFTER THE END OF AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, Laia and Elias set out to escape from the catacombs beneath Blackcliff Academy so that they can free Laia's brother from the terrible Kauf prison. As might be expected from the world's most perfect fantasy series, THINGS IMMEDIATELY GO TERRIBLY WRONG.One thing leads to another, and Elias spends most of the book dying. That's as close to a spoiler as I'll go - but trust me, there is SO MUCH THAT GOES ON BECAUSE OF THE TINIEST THING THAT HAPPENS RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK. It is perfect and I hate it and I love it.And of course, hero that he is, Elias tells no one. Meanwhile I'm sitting in my living room like, ELIAS, FRIEND, TALK TO LAIA. TELL HER YOUR FEELINGS. TELL HER YOUR SITUATION. But he doesn't because he is tortured and brooding and he feels like he's ruined everyone's life - and he's kind of right. His mom thinks he ruined her life (he didn't), and Helene is now Blood Shrike to a monstrous Emperor because of what Elias did in Ember, Elias's grandfather is on the run, most of his best friends are dead...Elias is sort of a ruiner. And because of that, he turns into a brooder. WHICH IS FINE, EVERYTHING IS FINE, BUT THAT REALLY DOESN'T LOWER MY STRESS LEVELS. I THINK SABAA WAS REALLY NOT CONCERNED ABOUT MY STRESS LEVELS WHEN SHE WROTE THIS.The addition of Helene's POV was a huge change in this book. I feel so bad for Helene - she's an example of a character who did her absolute best with the cards she was dealt. Best of intentions. Best work ethic. Most loyal of friends. And then what happens? A LOT OF HEARTBREAKING STUFF, THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS!!!(...I can hear you cackling, Sabaa!)The love triangles from An Ember in the Ashes came back stronger than ever in A Torch Against the Night - and I was so stressed out about the situation that I had to force myself to take a break for a couple of days. I kid you not. I literally had to shut the book and step away. And still - STILL - I couldn't be mad! The love triangles make sense! Everyone (except Elias with his new "I must never reveal my feelings to anyone" attitude) is behaving RATIONALLY!See, it's stressful for me because I wanted all four people to be happy. Which was impossible. At this point, I don't know if ANY of them will ever be happy. If I had to describe this book with a few words, those words would be: gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, perfection.Elias's storyline is the best (and simultaneously the worst). Because of a ... dying situation ... he starts slipping into a between-place, a place where spirits go before they move on. AND THE DECISIONS HE MAKES THERE CHANGE EVERYTHING.Look, this plot is the kind where every small thing ends up meaning something. There are no wasted words here, no wasted gestures. Sabaa did not waste her time on filler scenes or filler conversations. NONE OF IT IS A DRILL. IT IS ALL THERE FOR A REASON. The ending was PERFECT and HEART-STOPPING and I ALMOST LOST MY MIND. Absolute perfection, I cannot gush enough, I loved it.And I just realized I haven't even mentioned Sabaa's use of jinn! ...well, that's pretty much it. She uses them. And I really love the jinn because they are not fantasy staples! The more I think about this book, the more I want to rave about it.Look. Look. I could go on for days.Just read the book. It's perfect. Strong five out of five for me, there is no second-book-syndrome here. This book is at least as strong as An Ember in the Ashes, if not more so.I recommend to anyone who likes perfect books.I don't recommend to people with hypertension. This book will cause you problems.

This book already has a ton of reviews, so aside from saying you should read it, I want to tell you something I really enjoy about this series, aside from the characters, the plot, the mythology, etc., and it's this: I absolutely LOVE that the characters in this book TALK to one another. They're open about what's going on. They keep the people they care about informed of things that come up. They don't keep vital plot information from each other just to drag out the suspense, or cause unnecessary conflict that could have been avoided with a simple conversation. This happens in so many books, and it's so annoying when it does, so I really enjoy the fact that Sabaa Tahir's characters don't do this. It's refreshing. The first time I noticed it, I wanted to jump up and down and scream in joy because finally, FINALLY, we have rational characters going through crazy things and deciding to be open about the crazy things happening to them instead of hiding it for some stupid reason, like they're not all in this together. So, yes, you should read this book, because the story is compelling and the characters interesting, but mostly you should read it to find out how freaking awesome it is to see characters not hiding stuff so the author can drag out the story to five hundred pages.

***Review posted on The Uncharted Word blog***A Torch Against the Night starts right where it left off in An Ember in the Ashes: with Laia and Elias running for their lives as they are pursued by the Martials of the Empire. They are desperate to evade these men, as well as the Commandant, and to find their way towards Kauf where Laia’s brother is being held captive. Of course not all goes to plan, and there are some unforeseen events that take place along the way that ultimately provide a wide range of twists and turns that had me gasping out loud in some places, especially towards the end.First, I have to say that Tahir is a gifted storyteller. Her writing is precise, powerful, and emotive. She doesn’t rely too often on embellished description nor does she attempt to elongate events that are not worth our time. As a result, the story is fast-paced and downright thrilling. Rarely do we have a moment to just breathe. There’s always something going down. Someone running for their lives, hiding, hunting, haunting, observing, scheming, lying, loving. The sequel is just as brutal as the first book, if not even more so in its own way. Tahir isn’t afraid to harm her protagonists. Often in YA fantasies, the MC(s) are placed in a horrendously tragic world where all the bad things happen to everyone else around them. But not in this world. We learned this in the last book. Laia was beaten and scarred, and Elias was forced to do an unspeakable action that continues to haunt him to even the end of this book. Tahir doesn’t shy away from placing her characters in harm’s way and she makes sure to let us readers know that these events have weight and actively affect her characters’s behavior and actions. There is just enough action to keep me invested and the romance was, thankfully, held in check. I’m just about done with insta-love connections, and so I’m grateful that Tahir chose a different path, one in which Laia has affection for two boys, and makes certain decisions that break her heart, but in the end, keeps it whole. It’s a slow-burn romance, so don’t expect too much romantic affairs in this one.Elias is a wonderfully flawed, but still lovable character who can steal the heart of any girl. He is brave, competent, charming, intelligent, caring. All things good, basically. But I want to focus on the women for a second. This book was Laia’s book. This was her time to shine, to grow, to harden, and to rise up as a leader. She made many mistakes, but in the end she learned her lesson. Her character development was by far the best.My biggest disappointment in this book just happens to be Helene.“But you, Helene Aquilla, are no swift-burning spark. You are a torch against the night – if you dare to let yourself burn.”Yeah, she wasn’t burning bright enough, to be honest. I was excited to learn she would be given her own POV, but her chapters often fell flat for me. Her thinking was very much the same as the last book, and she didn’t rise up and take out Marcus from the inside as I had hoped. But there was some character development, just not in the way everyone would expect, which I suppose is a pretty smart choice for Tahir. Predictability in a book is never fun, so I suppose Tahir did well to keep us on our toes. The villains are just as nasty as they were in the first book. The Commandant’s presence was dialed back a bit so Marcus’s character could be highlighted a bit more. He’s just as terrible as before, even more so if possible, but somehow, some way, Tahir made me actually feel sorry for him. He’s suffering from his horrible decision in the last book and his guilt and shame are constantly haunting him. Tahir adds some humility to his character and reminds us that even though he’s a despicable human being, he is human nonetheless, and his actions have taken a toll on him.The book was, all in all, a very well-developed story with great characters, action, romance, and mystery. It’s definitely a powerful sequel to An Ember in the Ashes, and is quite possibly better than its predecessor. I can’t wait to see how this story ends.

The author calls himself a “gay Christian,” which is problematic on many levels. Christians are new creations, not people who are identified by what sins they struggle with. On a positive note, what you will discover in reading this book is a man expressing what it is like to love with same-sex attraction and still maintain an orthodox view of marriage (only between a man and woman) and a correct understanding of the sinfulness of homosexuality. The author describes his life as lonely and unfulfilled. It is helpful to read of the struggle men and women like him have living “between these worlds,” but I wasn’t convinced that how men and women have come to identify themselves is biblically accurate (e.g., “gay Christians”).

Highly valuable. Very intimate story that speaks to the real life struggles of Christians with same sex attraction. The content was thought provoking, authentic, and so very raw. I urge all those who profess to follow Christ to read this book. We are called to LOVE others, both within and outside of the Church. This book will help you examine yourself and hopefully, grow in Christ-likeness.

Another great gem among a growing genre in Christian literature; Washed and Waiting stands shoulder to shoulder with other great works encouraging Christians to think Biblically and ecclesiastically about homosexuality. This book has many strengths. For me, the chief strength has been his use of writings from other Christians who have deeply explored the isolation and loneliness that often marks celibacy for the same-sex attracted, Side-B believer.

Wesley Hill does a good job of explaining a complicated lifestyle choice that's worth it.He can come across as overly artistic to me in his formatting, but the theology is worthwhile to wrestle through and I would recommend this to any who are struggling to reconcile homosexuality and the Bible.

I can't imagine a more thoughtful, sensitive and biblically sound book than this on a topic we Christians need desperately to learn about. It made me cry and it gave me hope for my brothers and sisters with same-sex attraction. I am better for it.

The honesty and struggle Wes shares is so deeply moving. Wes advocates celibacy for gay Christians, but his personal story is so engaging and honest it gives great credibility to the idea that any gay Christian could model celibacy as well.

This is not for the thrill seeker, but for the person interested in diving into the moral and psychological struggle of another. Wes Hill's depth of self-examination is equally matched by his vast study on the topic he is tackling. One of the best books I've read on the subject of same-sex attraction.

Very helpful, good read, honest. This book is for the traditional evangelical who is looking for a healthy, non-judgmental, scriptural perspective on homosexuality.

I saw this book right after reading Profit First by Mike Machalowicz and being that I have an eCommerce business, I thought I should buy it to help me apply the Profit First system. The reason I was disappointed is:1. The majority of the book is "copy and paste" from Profit First. I don't mean that in an underhanded way. I know she wrote the book in collaboration with Mike but it felt like I was just reading the same book over again.2. 95% of the book is for someone who sells hard products on Amazon. There are more forms of eCommerce than this! I know she knows this because she mentions at the back of the book that half her clients are Shopify users, but she barely mentions them. I have a Shopify store and use the drop-ship fulfillment method, so I don't sell on Amazon, nor do I carry inventory.3. Most digital nomads have eCommerce businesses. She even profiles one. She address the problem that being located outside the USA makes it difficult to open the bank accounts necessary for the Profit First system, but then gives no solution to it.4. Many of the Illustrations in the book are too small to read, even on a Kindle App for Mac. She says larger versions are available on her website but you have to give an email address to access them. I understand the marketing technique but since I already paid for the contents of the book ( a rather high price for a Kindle book I might add ), having to give my email address to see a readable version of it seems rather odd.My advice? If you have an FBA business or other eCommerce business that stocks inventory, get this book.If you have a drop ship store or other form of eCommerce business that doesn't require carrying inventory, save your money on this and get Profit First.

A lot of helpful info in a compact book! I liked the idea behind the original profit first but found it hard to apply to the special circumstances of e-commerce. No longer! Thomason brings a lot of experience to the table in bridging the knowledge gap of applying profit first to Ecommerce sellers. The examples she provided were really helpful and even though I don't come from an accounting background she did a good job breaking down some principles so I could understand. I really liked how she had the common lingo down for ecommerce sellers. The resources she mentions in the book were really helpful although the video tutorial she mentioned several times in the book is still not up on the website as of 1.25.19. Hopefully that will be up soon because it will make the extremely important initial assessment calculation much easier.

This is exactly what I have been looking for. We implemented the Profit First system after learning about it a year ago. However, as an Amazon seller with inventory management nightmares, it has been a challenge to get Profit First to fit right. This book has dispelled many concerns I ran into the first time, making it feel not so alone in the process and realize Profit First is a great method to the Amazon madness.Favorite chapter so far is Ch 3, Stop The Inventory Insanity. This is everything we discovered wrong with the Amazon business model but did not know what to do about it. Many coaches and mastermind groups encourage you to put things on credit and maximize inventory to grow, with little to no knowledge of your accounts (or worse a false view of your accounts). So instead of spending more on a mentor or shiny new software get this book instead. Yes, a little sweat will be involved but you worked hard to get this far already, you might as well do a little more to make a big difference and peace of mind... oh and more PROFIT.True, this may not be for dropshippers but I think there is already so much great info for that audience. Many accountant professionals steer clear from Amazon clients accounting since it is a beast. Cyndi tackles it head on, and her company Bookskeep is open for questions to help you in the process. Well done! And thank you!Loyal fan for life.

Read it three times so far... The help aids and video references are also extremely helpful. I have referred many friends and business contacts. Grateful to have come across this at an early stage of our e-commerce selling career.

Heard Cyndi speak at a high powered retreat for ecomm sellers. I cannot wait to see how she breaks down the Profit Frist principles for my business. She knows her stuff inside and out and I would recommend her teaching and bookeeping to anyone!

This is the perfect book to get you started with good habits for bookkeeping and for making sure your cash flow matches to a healthy company! Cyndi is great explaining the entire process! Buy this book now and move forward, successfully!

The concepts in this book are simple, effective and quickly applied. I have been able to get a very clear outline of my business by implementing these strategies.

This is one of the best books I've ever read on introversion. It has helped me so much in my daily affairs. I couldn't imagine how I would have proceeded if this book hadn't crossed my path. I can't say thank you enough to the author! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

While the book helped me understand why as an introvert my energy level gets depleted faster than that of an extrovert what I really got out of the book is that introverts have major shortcomings. The author provides examples of practical exercises to do to survive in a world of extroverts. Most of those exercises work only for women and if you only work part time. If you have a full time job with deadlines you simply don't have time for breathing exercises, long walks, or aromatherapy. Towards the end of the book she teaches introverts how to be more extroverted. There were some good nuggets of scientific research the author quoted but the overall message was disappointing. The book left me feeling like I have major short comings as an introvert and I just need to accept the fact that I'm at a disadvantage. For one third of the price I thought it would have been worth the purchase.

The title The Introvert Advantage tricks you into picking it up by making you think there's actually some sort of secret advantage or gift that introverts have. Sadly, that advantage is never truly revealed. Very disappointing, strike one. Next, the book is very choppy and not a very organized or cohesive reading experience. It also uses overly cutesy language like, "innies" "outies" and various other lame phrases. Strike two. And at the end of the book the author basically says that it's okay to be an introvert (for the hundredth time) but that sometimes you have to be an extrovert, and then gives you advice on how to get out there and enjoy life more. Wow. I was basically beyond done at this point. Strike three, you're out. Are you kidding me? I just read this entire book of cuddly wuddly stories and various pats on the back about how it's okay to be an introvert, all for her to flip the table over and go- oh well you're actually gonna have to be like an extrovert sometimes. Bleh. Also, since when do extroverts make up 75% of the population and introverts only 25%? Most other sources I see have it estimated about equally at 50/50, which would make more sense that it's pretty balanced. I suppose the excuse for this misinformation is that the book is simply outdated. It kept going on and on about how we live in an extrovert world and you'd think we'd get some useful information on how great it is to be an introvert but it's really not like that at all in this book, it's surprisingly borderline condescending. The beginning of the book had some decent information, but then as soon as it started getting into relationship issues, it completely nose dived, even though I still continued reading hoping that this "advantage" would be revealed. Most of the book was just cobbled together situations and repetitive ramblings offering very obvious advice. I'm talking basic common sense stuff that the author apparently seemed to think was worth including. I'm not kidding, near the end of the book the author gives us lists of things to do. For example when we go outside we should have all these things to take with us such as chapstick and an umbrella if it rains. Yes, because this is not useless advice at all. Terrible. Besides, much of the supposed advice seems geared toward single moms or moms who work part time, certainly not the average working man.At one point early on the author even tells the reader that if you want to, go ahead and skip around and skim through pages. Why on earth would any author say this to their reader? For crying out loud, sell your book. Convince me why I should read it, don't tell me just to skip around if I want. And that pretty much sums it up, it's a book not worth reading. My advice- do not read this book, you will be disappointed and quite possibly very insulted. This is a poor book about introverts that unfortunately turns into a really lame self help book with a confusing message. This will not satisfy your itch to learn more about introversion and have a deeper understanding of yourself. It fails to deliver the goods, and if anything it further causes confusion and misunderstandings, and that's something that Introverts really don't need.

Up until a few years ago, I never really thought much about the idea that people are either introverts or extroverts. Of course, I noticed that some people are more outgoing than others but I never really considered why exactly that is. Now that I am in my mid 30s and raising a family, I am examining my personality more and thinking about why I am the way I am. When my husband and I started talking about it, we discovered we are both introverts and suddenly, everything made sense! That would explain why I disliked group projects in school so much and why I would dread giving speeches in class. I started becoming more interested in learning about the differences between introverts and extroverts and came upon this book. Let me point out that I have never read other books on introverts so I don't have any others to compare it to. However, I decided the reviews looked good and I should try to branch out of my normal preference for fiction novels so I purchased this book. One of the most interesting facts I immediately picked up in this book is that 75% of people are extroverts which means only 25% are introverts. It makes sense then why so many of our daily activities are more extrovert-centered and why introverts may think something is wrong with them. The truth is, there is nothing wrong with introverts. This book helps to explain that the brains of introverts and extroverts are different and thus, we process everything at different speeds and different ways. While I was reading this book, I could picture some of my friends and family who fit the personality traits of those mentioned in the book and it made it easier for me to understand the information presented.I like how the book is organized, even though at times some of the information seemed a bit daunting. The book is organized in three parts and within those three parts are a total of ten chapters. The book starts about by defining the ways in which introverts differ from extroverts then goes on to discuss ways in which we can thrive in the "outie" (extrovert) world but at the same time still be ourselves. There are sections for handling relationships, parenting, friendships, and jobs which I found helpful since I can go back and read a section that I feel is particularly useful to me. I enjoyed the author's occasional humor inserted into the book which added a little bit of zest for me. In the beginning the author states that you can read the book cover to cover or skip around and read whichever sections sound appealing. I chose to read the entire book and, because I am used to reading fiction novels from cover to cover, I didn't anticipate just how much information I would be taking in all at once with more of a self-help type of book. It probably would have been more beneficial to me to read a chapter here and there so I could have more time to process all of the interesting information. I will most likely just go back and reread the sections I want to review.Overall, I found this book to be a good resource so I can understand more about myself and how I can tweak certain things I do in order to still enjoy social activities and thrive out in the world without having to exhaust my energy constantly. This book would be a good read for any introvert wanting to learn more about their personality as well as extroverts who want to understand how introverts work. It certainly helped me to understand personalities a bit more and how I can interact with extroverts and still enjoy my own activities. I'm proud to be an introvert!
