While this is a hard read and could have some trigger factors for people who have been affected by drug and alcohol dependency, as well as eating disorders, it is SO timely and important. Reading through Victoria's diary you realize that any "average" teen can be deeply affected by very harmful issues. And the fact that it is scans of her actual diary, not just her words re-typed, really immerse you in the book. Book-ended with statements from her family, and important information about drug and alcohol dependency and the signs, this book is a unique treasure that I truly believe will impact lives of the right people. I have personally never had experience with issues that Victoria faces, but reading this has opened my eyes and given me a new sense of compassion and awareness for those that are struggling. It's not an easy read but it's a relatively quick one-- do yourself a favor and read this book!

Victoria's Voice is a heartfelt and honest look at how drugs and alcohol led to the tragic death of teenager. If you have watched the documentary "Queen of Versailles," you caught a glimpse of her. The film documented her family's life as they were building the largest house in America. Reading her journal makes her relatable and gives the feel of a modern-day Go Ask Alice, complete with hand-written hashtags. It was especially touching knowing Victoria gave her mom permission to publish her journal in her last text before she died. It's obvious her parents loved her and are dedicated to helping other parents save their children from going down the same road. The book includes a drug guide for parents, with pictures and street names, signs to watch for that could point to drug abuse in your own kids, and resources to turn to. It is a must-read for parents of teens or tweens.

I found the book interesting, but it seems that this young lady had no relationship with her parents. I have a daughter that is 6 years sober, has a beautiful two and a half old daughter and another daughter due in July. I am a retired school teacher and did not have the means to send her to a pricey 30 day rehab. Instead she went to a place in Sumter, SC. It cost 700.00 to get her in and I had to promise she would be there for nine months. She met her husband there and they have a very good, sober life together. The rehab is called Any Length. They get the patient detoxed and then take them out to get a job so they can pay for themselves while they are there. Parents are not allowed to have any contact during the first month. Parents are NEVER allowed to give them money. It is not an extravagant place, but it serves the purpose we all want for our children. Sobriety that last for the rest of their lives!

Disappointed it didn't come with a dust jacket because it never said it didn't in the description. I wouldn't have bought it if it had states there was no jacket

Borten's classic book is "Do You See What I See?". It is a compelling introduction to lines, shapes and colors that opened the eyes of young readers to graphic art in 1959. This followup, first published in 1960 and reissued now by Flying Eye Books, does the same thing for sound, but of course a picture book isn't the best vehicle for introducing the many and varied aspects of "sound".That said, this book does more, and does it better, than any other early reader I've sampled. While the first book favored drawings over text this book is driven by the text, with the artwork playing a supporting role. And that text is lyrical and compelling.We start with "quiet" and "loud", and then "short" and "long". Delightful examples of each and where they come from and how they can make you feel. So we think about whispers and butterfly wings and ocean waves and a foghorn and a cracking whip. But Borten doesn't stop there and she drives the reader into ever new territory. What makes the sound? Is that "hisss" a snake or a deflating balloon? What is that sound in the house in the middle of the night? And then we turn to rhythm and to music and to symphonies of sound.This is elegant stuff. It isn't poetry with rhyme and meter, but it is such carefully crafted prose that "poetic" is one of the only ways to describe it. The result, (and especially for a young reader or read-to), is that you are captured by the idea of sound, you think about sound in a new and creative way, and you are introduced to fine writing. That is a powerful payoff for a simple picture book. Helen Borten's bright illustrations and descriptive text take the reader through a discussion of all sorts of sounds. Everything from the moods they can create to the things they remind us of are mentioned. The loud noises of the city, the quiet of pigeons cooing, and the constant sound of the sea in motion may all be compared by their location and their effect. The similes in the book would be excellent examples to use with students in lessons on descriptive writing. Phrases like "fierce as a lion" and "mysterious as a secret whispered in someone's ear" make a much stronger impression than just saying loud or soft. The poetic nature of Borten's writing also comes through in sentences like, "There are sounds as near and warm as a kiss - or as far off and gray as a fog horn."She also points out that sometimes it is not the sound, but its source that causes a specific reaction in us. For example - a hiss from a snake is scary, the hiss of air leaking from a balloon is not. Besides talking about whether sounds can be long or short, high or low, and loud or soft, Borten also talks about rhythm and pattern. Brass bands, horses' hooves, and drums can all create a rhythm. When many instruments combine their sounds and rhythms together, they become an orchestra. The variety of sounds that are mentioned range from those too soft to hear, like the wings of a butterfly beating, to those that are loud like the noise from a circus.The illustrations are done in the same style as Do You See What I See? with a mix of bright colors, printed patterns, and lines. I love the endpapers with musical notations printed over the shapes of saws, birds, bells, and french horns. The title page images could lead into a great discussion before the book is even begun, because young readers will be curious about the sound waves that are pictured and why they differ from each other.Whether readers are drawn to the book due to its visual appeal, or because they are interested in the subject of sound, they will have an enjoyable experience. Classrooms and school libraries would be wise to add copies of this title since it can be used with so many subjects - science, music, writing, and art, just to name a few.
