I originally had this book during the late 1970's when I was living in far northwest Montana near Browning, MT in the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. In my work I had to interact with tribal members quite often. One day I met an old man of the tribe named Louie Yellow Wolf who couldn't hear much anymore. We had trouble communicating as he couldn't read lips. I found this book at a used book store in Kalispell, Montana and within a week or two was able to use the signs found in the book fairly well. Indian sign is much more simple than modern sign language for the hearing and speech impaired in use today and can be learned quite easily. The next time me and the old man met up I said "hello Yellow Wolf" to him in Indian sign language. His eyes lit up. And we "talked sign" for over an hour. He even taught me some slang in sign not found in this book and before long other more elder members of the tribe would come along and get a kick out of watching this novice white guy try using sign. They freely corrected me when I messed up and I can still hear those old men laughing and looking at each other with amusement but they told me in sign talk they were proud of me for learning their unspoken language. Of course most of them spoke english but loved to use the vanishing language. Using sign can come in handy when you want to be quiet I.E.; hunting, bird watching, fishing, etc. Not all Native Americans know sign language anymore and most of the signs in the book pertain to the northern/plains tribes but is still an interesting skill to have.I was happy that Amazon offers this unique book and highly reccomend it.

The order and instruction are clear and easy to follow even without illustrations. However, I was disappointed that common words or synonyms for some basic vocabulary such as 'please', 'thank you', and 'sorry' and basic directions like 'left', 'right', 'straight' or cardinal directions,or other synonyms were not listed anywhere in the book. The illustrations were well portrayed. The book does cover the basics however some of the signs are combination words such as 'shawl' is making the sign for WOMAN and BLANKET other signs are interchangeable. For instance, the sign for 'wolf' is the same for spy, cunning, and Pawnee. Overall I consider this a good way to be introduced to the Native sign language.

This is not for children. This will get you started and take you far enough to actually sign. It's 105 pages of paperback with simple drawings and further description in writing for each sign drawn. There are many more written descriptions in alphabetical order. This was first copyrighted in 1969 and is interesting today. There is also information on pictography, a small section on smoke signals and the history of sign language. There are examples of sentence formation, and some prewritten stories for you to try your skills on. The book is geared towards Boy Scouts, but everyone who wants to take the time to learn signs should enjoy this. But you will be amazed at how much information there is to learn it.

I like the historical references and photos that are featured in the book. My only complaint is that it is sometimes hard to tell if you're actually doing the sign correctly based upon the guide photos. Also, the book was a little small. Either way, it's a good purchase and a good beginner look into Native American Sign Language.

Very happy to have this book because the deaf Native students loved it. Noticeably, their self-esteem was lifted up as they were motivated to study their ancestral sign language. This book is an excellent resource for learning aboriginal sign language because the signs are very clear and well-descriptive to follow. Two thumbs up!

Mr. Tomkins has written this book with the first hand knowledge of the Lakota (Sioux) people. I highly recommend reading and learning to sign from this book. There is a large amount of words and phrases to learn and it is easy to do so with his illustrations. This is a--Good- Book- Indian- Sign Language (the cover signing!) Also included is Boy Scout information.

Good, clear, concise--line drawings show just how the signs should be made. Useful for Scouts and anyone wanting to learn some signs, for historic re-enactments, and for communicating across a crowded, noisy space.

I used this book to teach myself hand signs for my Cub Scout pack. We recently had a campout and I told a story using hand signs. My youngest son learned with me, so he was my translator. Cool experience for my Scouts and my son. I am very happy to know this now and plan on continuing my study.
