After a successful career with large companies, Author August Turak decided to leave the corporate world for a more adventurous life as an entrepreneur. His transition was a material success. He created and sold two highly successful software businesses. But for him, the most important transition during this period came after going through a personal crisis and needing psychological and spiritual help.He got what he needed and began a 20+ year relationship with the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance known to most of us as the Trappists. “Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks: One CEOs Quest for Meaning and Authenticity” captures Turak’s experience of living and working with these monks and details what he learned about the essence of authenticity and real success in life. The Trappists are a monastic community who get their commonly known name from La Trappe Abbey in Normandy, France where their order began in the late 17th Century. They work only four hours a day and spend the rest of the day in solitary prayer, contemplation, and sacred reading. Turak was transformed personally and professionally by a Trappist community, Our Lady of Mepkin Abbey, in Charleston, South Carolina. These monks adhere to the arduous Rule of St. Benedict (prayer is a form of work and work is a form of prayer) which provides the transformational experience much like boot camp does for the Marines and the twelve-step program for AA and other programs dealing with addiction.Self-sufficiency is essential to the Trappists. They make and sell beer, preserves, fruitcake and cheese to cover their community’s operating costs. They’re known for their business acumen and their emphasis on high quality products. Turak’s curiosity and mindfulness led him to look at the Trappists as case study in good business practices and achieving authenticity. Turak shares these “secrets” and methodologies which the Trappists have preserved and profited by for centuries. What was their business model? What were the key methodologies and secrets they used to create highly successful businesses? And what role did their approach to life play in their success? He found that piety, not profit, is the mission of the Trappists. Piety comes from the Latin word for duty and “it applies to God, country, our fellow man and any noble undertaking that transcends our purely selfish motives.” Duty for the monks, contrary to contemporary fads, is the path to our ultimate purpose: being transformed from a selfish to a selfless person and authenticity. “True success is a by-product of a life well-lived.”He came, also, to understand that each of us has a “sacred duty to customers, employees, vendors, the local community and mankind.” He learned that it is in our self-interest to forget our self-interest by committing to a “high, overarching mission and management philosophy centered on service and selflessness…The ripple effects of service and selflessness are endless.”Turak identifies the Trappist secrets as:1. Always aim past the target.2. Do all we do with a prayerful attitude.3. Service and selflessness must become habitual and automatic.4. Have the courage to “go first” with our vulnerability.5. Have enough faith to trust the process.6. Exhibit authenticity and sincerity.7. Admit mistakes.Key topics that flow from these secrets include: purpose, mission, meaningful work and passionate engagement, excellence, community and culture (stop managing individuals and start managing the culture), sacrifice (the leader must be willing to die a thousand deaths on the way to success), the monastic virtues of discernment and detachment, ethical standards (why good things happen for good people), the power of faith and trust (real leadership depends on persuasion and persuasion depends on trust), and the importance of self-knowledge. Examples of each are threaded throughout the book.Joseph Campbell’s “The Heros Journey” - The Call; Resistance to the Call; The Desert Experience; Death and Rebirth; The Return to Help – is referenced in the book as a necessary journey to achieve authenticity. This journey is necessary for transformation – it unmasks us and reveals our true character.“Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks” is inspirational and provocative. This book will resonate with those who seek meaningful success in business and life and want to achieve authenticity. It is an antidote to the selfishness and chaos we see in today’s world.

This is the business book that every executive, entrepreneur and manager ought to read. If you let it, Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks: One CEO's Quest for Meaning and Authenticity will not only change your perspective on how to be successful in business, it will be a road map on how to conduct your life.August Turak opened up his heart when he penned Business Secrets. He shared his wild fortunes, his missteps, and his personal challenges. In the end we learn a lesson in generosity, selflessness, respect and the value of an investment in caring for the people who surround you.I loved this book. I purposely only read a short chapter each day, often twice, in order to really soak in the pages. It was my first step in my commitment to live the life. I'll be reading it again and again for sure.

It's hard to describe this book because I've never read another like it. It's deeply personal and completely universal; it's nuts-and-bolts business insight and it's profound spiritual insight; it's ancient philosophy told through the lens of "Star Wars" and "The Devil Wears Prada."The best review I can give, I think, is a direct quote. Watch how he starts with a fairly commonplace psychological insight about money, moves to a concrete business application that most businesses could benefit from tremendously, twists it into an unusual look at the entertainment industry, and then (as he would say) "transcends" all that as he brings it back to his overarching theme of selflessness.---------------One of the most useful things I learned as a sales and marketing executive is the concept of "dollar votes"...if we really want to understand what motivates people, we should look at how people actually spend their money...I may argue quite persuasively that helping others is my top priority, but if I donate far more money to my favorite casino than to my favorite charity, I shouldn't be surprised if you remain unconvinced. In my own company, after some disappointing forays with surveys, we dispensed with this type of market research altogether. Instead, whenever we had a new product idea, we would presell the product into our customer base with a discount for prerelease software. Only if our customers were willing to pony up cold, hard cash would we in turn invest in full-blown product development. If the requisite number of sales was not forthcoming, we gave refunds to the disappointed few and headed back to the drawing board. This approach guaranteed that every product we introduced had a market, and it was actually less expensive and time consuming than traditional forms of market research. When we look at the world through the lens of dollar votes, we see an almost insatiable human demand for stories. Books, movies, and television are multibillion-dollar industries...The fact that we spend so much money on stories--in good times and bad--demonstrates that stories offer something we really want, not just something we like to say we want. And what most stories offer is the vicarious experience of transformation. We all learned in English 101 that in every compelling story, the main character must be transformed over the arc of the story...According to dollar votes, the fact that we spend so much time and money watching others being transformed proves that it is this essential transformation from selfishness to selflessness that we all really want. Of course the tragic part of this analysis is that for most of us, this urge toward transformation remains vicarious...deep inside we realize that just as we can't pay someone else to go to the gym, we can't be transformed secondhand either.

The Wild Bunch: Sam Peckinpah, a Revolution in Hollywood, and the Making of a Legendary Film, by W. K. Stratton

Review

"In his detailed and passionately argued history of The Wild Bunch, writer W.K. Stratton takes the debate to a higher level and convincingly positions the film as the best Western ever made―and among the greatest of movies. Stratton collects the kinds of elements required for a lively movie backstory: a talented if irascible director, quirky cast and crew members, a difficult location shoot and a controversial reception by moviegoers and critics. Best of all, he recounts how an idea becomes a film and the creative, economic and fate-driven roadblocks it faces." - Associated Press"Reading W.K. Stratton’s fine book after watching The Wild Bunch can make for a rich aesthetic feast." - The Washington Post"Definitive . . . Stratton’s book is part making-of chronicle, part appreciation, part personal reminiscence. . . . He’s not a film critic, but a passionate and knowledgeable generalist who knows how to drill deep." - Vulture"Sam Peckinpah’s classic western is lovingly picked over in this obsessive treatment of its making and reception." - New York Times Book Review, in New & Noteworthy"Insightful and engaging, Stratton’s book will hold the attention of even those who despise the movie." - Roundup Magazine"No person of sensibility who has seen The Wild Bunch has not felt the extraordinary richness of lived experience that courses throughout the film. This is one of many things that lifts it far above the action genre and the Western to the epic. It is a singular achievement of W. K. Stratton’s book on its making that he shows this was not adventitious . . . Stratton documents how Peckinpah’s masterpiece became not only a great film but one of the enduringly great artworks of the past century." - Paul Seydor, author of THE AUTHENTIC DEATH AND CONTENTIOUS AFTERLIFE OF PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID: The Untold Story of Peckinpah’s Last Western Film"Stratton’s book examines the history of the Western and details the ambition and, at times, lunacy of making what has become an American classic." - Newsweek"Muscular study . . . Stratton pulls together big strands of story: the history of the Mexican revolutionary period, Peckinpah's own fascination with Mexico, the history of U.S.-Mexico relations, the history of moviemaking itself. . . Essential reading for fans of the epochal (and reportedly soon to be remade) movie as well as movie-history and Western buffs generally." - starred review, 11 Early 2019 Books We Love, Kirkus Reviews"Stratton paints a wonderfully full portrait of director Sam Peckinpah and his quest for a more realistic depiction of violence at a time when the brutality of the Vietnam War was increasingly penetrating American living rooms. . . . What’s most striking here is the depth of Stratton’s research, with attention given to every aspect of, and player in, the film. This engaging, well-researched book belongs in every library and in the hands of every student of cinema." - starred review, Library Journal"Stratton does a fine job of putting the film in its historical context . . . THE WILD BUNCH is a valuable addition to the literature of American film history and will be greeted by Wild Bunch devotees with adoration." - starred review, Booklist"Stratton’s thorough research yields a fascinating perspective on how Peckinpah created a western of unparalleled realism and intensity." - Publishers Weekly"My favorite kind of film books tend to be those that go behind the scenes, that provide inside looks at how celebrated films were put together, [THE WILD BUNCH] falls squarely in that category." - Critic's Choice, Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times"Stratton loves “The Wild Bunch” (he succinctly writes, ‘I've never seen a better movie’), but this is not a gushing fan letter. Stratton's meticulous research, exhaustive interviews and scholarship all combine to create a fascinating portrait of a maverick filmmaker working at the top of his game and pushing the boundaries of moviemaking." - Shelf Awareness"Stratton's anecdote-packed book explores when, why and how The Wild Bunch was made." - Dallas Morning News"Stratton has written an ambitious and lively history . . . At the heart of [THE WILD BUNCH] are dozens of informative and colorful interviews, conducted with everyone from screenwriters and stuntmen to Hollywood producers and Mexican film stars." - San Diego Union Tribune

The book is padded with biographical CHAPTERS on multiple cast members -- material that has been already been covered in other books, often at greater length & depth. One hopes (in fact, demands) that when the topic is something that has received a lot of attention in a lot of books, that the new entry brings a fresh mind to the table with, at minimum, a new spin. Alas, not here. The above-referenced padding is a dead giveaway that this author has NOTHING new to say. In fact, he has nothing to to say. And, he does it poorly to boot. He thinks Dutch betrayed Angel. Anyone knows that the mother of the girl he killed ratted him out to Mapache. Dutch merely had to go along with it, having been been put on the spot. this is hardly the same as "betraying" Angel. (However, no doubt that some bookhouse lawyer will enthusiastically split hairs like any dumb damn fan boy.) On page 126 there is an indisputable factual error. The author says that Holden and Hepburn fell in love making SABRINA when both were already married. SABRINA was filmed in 1953. She married M. Ferrer in September 1954, just as the film was released. When I read that, I wanted to throw the book in the trash. I still might.

I had great hopes for this book, but it covers no new territory or has anything really insightful to say about Peckinpah'smasterwork. Really it is just a fan boy's love letter to the film. The author often knocks other films to enhance The Wild Bunch's reputation, which is unnecessary and often questionable. The author goes out of his way to dismiss the Western scores of Elmer Bernstein, especially for The Magnificent Seven but Jerry Fielding's excellent score for The Wild Bunch often uses the same orchestral tropes Bernstein does, and is in no way innovative or unusual.I was also troubled by his reference to Eli Wallach as a "Jew." Which I guess he means Wallach should not play a Mexicanlike his role in Leone's The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. I love The Wild Bunch and it is ill served by this stupid fawningbook.

This is a well written and thoroughly researched book. It goes far beyond merely analyzing the film The Wild Bunch and the career of its director, Sam Peckinpah. It also offers a partial biography of Peckinpah, biographical sketches of several of the other key people involved in the making of the movie, chunks of history about Hollywood and western films, contextual historical information about U.S.-Mexico border relations that influenced the plot of the film, etc. Reading the book is an educational experience. The only qualifier I will put on this positive review is that some might find the book too exhaustive. You have to care an awful lot about The Wild Bunch, Peckinpah, and the film industry from the era, to want to take in all of this information. The content could have been cut by a third or more, and the reader would still have come away with a deeper understanding of the topics mentioned in the subtitle. So it's just a matter of how much information you'd want from a book like this. But in any case, it's written very well and is highly informative.

I've loved The Wild Bunch since it first knocked my socks off on opening day in 1969, and I lost count of how many times since. If I find it on cable, I watch it. And it works every time, just like the first time. This book is totally worthy of this movie. What a helluva story!

A wonderful history of the making of a classic film and time. Any fan of western or of movies in general will enjoy it. Also a very informative telling of revolutionary Times in Mexico

There are films that make history and gain undying reputations simply through a trick of timing: "The Jazz Singer", for instance, is not only unwatchable today, it virtually was in it's heyday (and, it was NOT-of course- the first "talkie"), but it's place is secure.Conversely there are those films that bring nothing new to the form but just do the old stuff so much better. There isn't a single thing in the "Godfather" films that weren't in place in "Little Caesar" or "Scarface (the Muni version) or "Public Enemy". But Coppola does them better, smoother, and with better actingThere are VERY few films that can lay claim to both being unique/influential AND one of the best of their genre. In crime films there's "Touch of Evil"; In westerns... hell, in drama as a whole, there's "The Wild Bunch"There have been any number of books, articles, panel discussions, about this masterpiece, but it was in desperate need of someone who combined the talents and know-how of a Westerner, film-buff/historian, and (and this is the kicker) poet to bring it all togetherW.K.Stratton is that author, and this is the DEFINITIVE book on the "Bunch" in all its aspects

This will not disappoint. Stratton misses nothing. If you don't read this one, you're just egg sucking southern trash, just like some animal, just another two bit redneck peckerwood.

A little slow going but very interesting.

I have 2 boys in elementary school I was looking for some good quran translations and stories for them. I went to couple of local places and bought a lot of books. I also ordered this to see and I am delightfully surprised. This is a very very simple translation of quran even so that I read it with the kids everyday and I enjoy it and the kids enjoy it tooI had their cousins over for the New Years and even they sat down and read it. One of them is 13 and other is turning 14. I actually gave them my copy and ordered another one for my kids.I think i am going to get a couple of more to pass it to all the kids in my family. Each section has the translation and a short background in simple English which is easy to read even for adults.I highly recommend this for kids and even for adults.

As far as translation, it is the best I have seen so far. However, the background/introductions can be more clear and on point. They are not the type of introduction that you would remember after a while kind of not coherent, or most important of all help you understand the context. I gifted this for my niece, but when I read a few pages I could remember much vividly from my childhood what the background of the Aya's were than what was written in segmented vague way by this translator.

This is a must have for every Muslim family with kids that are in need of an English interpretation to the Quran. It's language is so easy to understand ( my son is in third grade and can read it on his own) . Plus in some verses it does not only interpret the meaning but also tells the story behind it . I actually ordered more of it to give it as gifts to other Muslim families .

Love this Qur'an translation. It is simple and clear, which is so hard to find. I also LOVE the background info provided throughout. Although it's titled "for school children," adults will appreciate and learn from this as well. The language and concepts are also for older children. My 11-year-old mostly understands, but some of it is above my 9-year-old's head.

This is a nice translation to read with children. It has some pictures in it that sometimes capture my 5 and 7 year old's attention. The translation is too difficult for my 7 year old to fully comprehend but when we read it together I attempt to break it down even further for them to understand. They have come to enjoy spending 15-20 minutes a day with me reading the Qur'an together. My only wish is that if it could have been broken down into a number of volumes. Sometimes kids can get intimidated by picking up a book so big and heavy. Also, it would have been nice if it had more pictures and if the pictures were in color rather than black and white.

As a teacher I find this book can be a great reference when trying to explain Qur'an to children in simple terms. I really like the way the author, Yahiya Emerick, took the time to explain the stories behind each surah even with all of the details. He does so very well and in a manner that is very child friendly. Alhamdulilah. As with any resource, however, it is important to take time to verify the accuracy of the author's interpretation. I wouldn't rely on this book as the only resource for teaching Qur'an to children. Other sources like Tafsir Ibn Kathir etc, can serve as reliable references as well. It's a thick heavy book and the cover looks exactly as is shown in the picture.

Good bookWhen my kids start a new surah to memorize or read, we open the book to help them understand the meaning of itI recommend it for moms and teachers

This is a highly accessible translation of the Quran designed to be read by young people, but actually insightful for all. In the past, attempts at profundity or a classical academic style made the English translation dry, difficult to read, and difficult for kids to understand. This simplifies the language, provides lots of pictures and graphics, and is far more readable. I have bought several of these as gifts. Its casual style will allow kids to get some real insight into God's message to Muslims.
