Zen on the Trail: Hiking as Pilgrimage, by Christopher Ives

Review

“Like John Muir, Chris Ives knows that going out into the natural world is really going inward. This book about pilgrimage is itself a pilgrimage: we accompany the author as he leaves civilization behind to enter the wilderness and encounter his true nature and original face.” (David R. Loy, author of Money, Sex, War, Karma: Notes for a Buddhist Revolution; The Great Awakening: A Buddhist Social Theory; The World Is Made of Stories; A Buddhist Response to the Climate Emergency; and The Dharma of Dragons and Daemons)"Highly informative and richly personal, Zen on the Trail reveals how heading out on a trail can carry us beyond our usual senses and sense of ourselves to uncover new possibilities, opening up spacious vistas that deepen our lives. Ives shows us how we might see such passages in the rhythms of our larger life journeys as well. Along the way we receive useful lessons in Zen philosophy, lore, and practice. " (Taigen Dan Leighton, author of Zen Questions: Zazen, Dogen and the Spirit of Creative Inquiry, and translator of Dogen’s Extensive Record)"A fresh approach to hiking as pilgrimage, enriched by the Chris Ives's deep familiarity with Zen traditions and Japanese ideas of nature.  This book offers gateways to epiphany and self-realization through experiencing reconnection in the midst of letting go.  Ives draws from his own Zen practice and spiritual hiking to encourage readers to taste the intimacy of encounter, transience, and the sacred. A lovely book of reflections.” (Prof. Stephanie Kaza, author of Mindfully Green)

Some 40 years ago, in the course of my own pilgrimage through life, I boarded a jet bound for Japan with a friend, Christopher Ives, the author of this wonderful book. We’d already had many adventures together, but the next few years took us around some corners neither of us expected, including a few that included surprises from another reviewer, Dean Cycon, who had “hiked” a little ahead of us. One of the corners I remember with Chris involved being approached by an itinerant monk, a yamabushi I believe, who invited me to join him and leave the trail I was following then behind. I wasn’t brave enough to say yes, (and I was thirsty and hungry for some beer and yaki-tori), so I declined politely, and returned to rejoin Chris and the others we were traveling with. Then, fast forwarding to now as I read Zen on the Trail, I found myself thinking that Chris had become that yamabushi, and was not only inviting me, but all of us, to join him on the trails of life. It’s good to have a second chance to say yes to what might be, to encounter old friends and make new ones, and to continue to wander and wonder at the world. The book is a gateway to a new phase of my journey. It could be yours, too, and Chris is a good guide...and a very good guy. Just buy the book, please. Buy several, and give some away...and go for a walk. It will be good for all of us.

Christopher Ives has done an amazing thing. He has taken the simple and sometimes mundane activity of hiking and found within it a spiritual core. But isn't that what Zen and all mystical traditions illuminate for us? Reading this book is like walking next to the author down a trail and interestingly down many of the pathways of his life experience. It is like a joyful yet deep conversation with a spiritual friend. Read it!

The only person who could have written this compelling book is, in equal parts, a Buddhist, philosopher, teacher, and hiker. “Zen on the Trial” reads like a series of interwoven haikus—some of them very funny. As we walk with Ives through the woods, it doesn’t take long to realize he’s a large thinker who wears his scholarship lightly, someone who finds profound insights in tiny details—worlds in grains of sand. What an excellent guide he is. What an inspiring, beautiful read!

Beautifully written and laid out. A real pleasure to read through and Chris's sections on "Letting Go" and "Ritualizing a Walk" were fascinating. Highly recommended!

Although Ives certainly wouldn't approve - Zen On the Trail would in fact make an awesome audiobook while hiking the White Mountains. Like an expert tour guide, steeped in the insights of his museum, he reveals the Zen in the swaying maple trees and the sacred in our sweaty feet.Another idea that would certainly make him cringe - is if we turned this book into a virtual reality hike and hyperlinked everything you could touch and see. When you point to the trickling stream, a poem by the eccentric Zen monk Ryokan would be gently read to you. Or when you pass a fellow traveler, a drop down box would appear, explaining the ritual significance of circumambulation in holy sites like Mecca or stupas on Nepal.I can already see him shaking his head at the thought of making this book required reading for summer camp - where kids were instructed to apply his hiking practices in order to heal their “nature-deficit disorder”. Maybe the kids would have to sit quietly on a rock and connect with the mountain energy in their own bodies. Or when the red-tailed hawk soars over head, they would be expected to emulate the Tao in effortless flight.(Actually, that last one might not be all that bad.)At any rate, I think he intended the book to be read exactly the way I did - 30,000 feet in the air, drinking chilled tomato juice, on my way to a destination wedding at a Floridian beach. And while we’re soaring through the air, cultivate a moment where we look out the window and open ourselves to the immensity of clouds and space and human potential so that even stillness is pilgrimage and every breath the way.

This book is EXCELLENT. The writing is beautiful, the information is eye-opening, and the depth of thought is genuinely impressive. A lot of times I would just stop and reflect for a moment after reading certain passages. It's a rewarding read and will bring added depth and pleasure to anyone's outdoor experiences...and frankly, to the way you think about life.

#619,257 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Great story about an awful event and provides a thorough review of how cases proceed and navigate. The problem is the authors’ writing style. They repeat themselves to ad nauseam. Likewise, the authors struggle with paragraph development. Many themes take a hard left mid paragraph, only to be repeated three more times. Tragic story and educational value: 5 stars. Writing style: Two and 3/4 stars. It was a GREAT 250 page book that lasted 400 pages.

Class Action is one of the best books I have ever read. I simply could not put it down once I started reading it. The story, itself, is gripping. If this were a work of fiction, it would stretch the imagination to believe that such things could happen. The fact that this is a true story just stuns the reader to the depth of the soul. But, beyond the nature of the story, is the excellent writing. It is as engrossing as the best novel - cohesive, fast paced & intelligble. There is just enough legal background and explanation given to make the events understandable to the lay person without making the book a lesson in Civil Procedure. I cannot recommend this book too highly. Thank you to the authors for bringing this story to the public in such an empathetic and understandable way, and to the women of the story who changed the lives of all human beings for the better.

Extremely well written that it provides a historical record. We forget how far we've come and those who fought before us.

Excellent book. Written very fast-paced while giving a ton of detail.

I assume that you will have seen the Movie first. I would have never heard of this book, without references in the DVD. BUT it is not necessary that you see the movie first. AND if you see the movie after reading the book be prepared for differences. But aside from comparisons, this is a terrific read about the first successful Sexual Harrassment case in the USA. It is set in the North Country made famous by Mr. Zimmerman. In fact some of the scenes and some of the characters are from Hibbing. Hero is one of the many misused words in Americana. But hero could be safely applied to the Lawyers who defended Lois Jenen.

This is a great read, a page turner, and heartbreaking saga of women's endurance and sacrafice.

My wife was high school best friends with the heroine of this story. Ergo, I have access to more complete information than revealed in this story.Still, it is much more fact than fiction, despite the 'poetic license' sometimes exhibited by the author. Sometimes the author was simply denied access to the whole truth. In the end, the story unwinds in this book much as it did in real life, but some of the details aren't always right on target. This was a landmark legal case that changed things on a national scale, and as such it can be viewed as history. And the history as put forth in this story is clearly more accurate than what was presented in the movie "North Country", which is another telling of the same tale. The writing is good enough to carry the book, even if it were totally fiction. But it's not -- I can recommend it.

Love it!

I usually get two guide books for every trip I take, Lonely Planet and DK (recently I started to try out Fodor's. I don't think I like it because its layout or format is kind of confusing. Maybe I'm not used to it yet). Compared to DK, LP is much more detailed in my opinion, but DK offers more photos. I felt compelled to write a review because I found DK is getting harder and harder to read due to its extremely small font, especially the description next to a photo or illustration). Maybe I'm getting old and need reading glasses (in fact my husband said he couldn't read anything on DK, lol). After reading it for a while, my eyes just start to hurt and I don't feel like reading it anymore. I don't know why the publisher make the font so small. I would imagine older people would have a hard time reading it. BTW, I'm 41-year-young :)

I really like eyewitness travel guides. I got the same book when I went to Rome 15 years ago. I am using it again on this trip. One thing I did notice, that in 15 years my eyesight has declined. And it's very difficult to read the small print. Oh well, maybe one of my younger travel companions will be able to read it for us. Hey, Eyewitness! If you read this, please give us Kindle versions. Makes it much easier to travel with your guides. That way we don't have to lug around these heavy (1.5lb) books. Then I could also adjust the text size. (This is why this guide loses 1 star in my review)

Great Pictures. Information seemed dated.Large heavy book. Better information available in the Fodors book which is a pound less. The pictures are beautiful and this would make a good coffee table or bookcase book, but not a good book to travel with. I couldn't find operating hours quickly for attractions. It annoyed me that I could not find the info in a logical place.

The indexes are so inadequate that the book is only minimally useful. Why on earth is it too difficult to do them well? I am required to search and look for cross indices and find after standing on the street looking for references to what I am looking for and finally then find only the most minimal information on what I am looking at? I found the guides far more frustrating than useful. I would not buy these guides again when I travel.

This was so handy and easy to use. Love the way the book is organised by areas of the cities. Really liked the foldout map with the color-coded walking only streets. The book fit easily into my purse. The travel tips in the back, specific to Budapest were spot on and very helpful. Having the book added a lot of confidence for us navigating a big city on our own. Will most definitely be buying similar Top 10 books for other travel destinations.

I have been using this DK rome book for the last 15 years, so I know all the versions. This 2019 is a complete revamp. I suggest the 2018 version. The changes are: no more glossy pages (soft matte paper is used); no restaurant section in the back (they are interspersed on every page); elimination of almost 50 pages of history; a language section that is hilariously small print (I put on glasses to see it and still could not). In short, the changes to this book make it rather ordinary, and even hard to use. Even an image of the Pantheon mislabels where Raphael's tomb is. As someone who ordered this book annually, I can just say that the beauty, style, and colorfulness of this edition has been destroyed, and I urge all buyers to think twice before purchasing the 2019 version. I can't imagine going to Rome without some introductory history, and the editor of this new version must have been literally out to lunch when approving the new version.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel are my favorite series of travel guides. DK produces the most detailed and beautiful photographic guides. I have one for every country or city I’ve visited since first discovering them 18 years ago while living in the UK. I still buy the books for trip planning (and the gorgeous visuals), but now I also purchase and download the Kindle version of their 'Lists of 10 Top' guides for the specific location to lighten my luggage load.

COMPLETELY outdated. I looked up a few things online for further information and of the handful I checked, all but one were closed -- and had closed years ago.
